When I taught KS2, we had fun with the My Very...
The class would make up their own, and we would all have a great laugh.
Maybe we could do it now on mumsnet!
ps: they don't actually need to know the order of the planets - it's just for fun.

I found a mnemonic never stuck ... I could always remember something vague about jam sandwiches, then a friend told me:
M VEM J SUN P
Pronounced: "Emm, Vem, Jay, Sun, P"
And that worked for me.

I was taught "My very easy memory jingle seems useful naming planets" but was cheesed off when I discovered that the last two are actually interchangeable - Pluto is usually farthest from the Sun, but its orbit crosses inside Neptune's for 20 years out of every 248 years. Just to confuse the issue!

And now Pluto has been declassified as a planet. It is now just a large asteroid. What a shame.
Juuule, I learned that one from a book too- I wonder which one. I have a feeling it was Robert Heinlein. Ring any bells with you?

I've just realised that the one I was taught in primary school many moons ago is actually offensive and inappropriate.
Our teacher painstakingly told us the story of the Merchant of Venice, so he could teach us the mnemonic (with apologies):
Miserly Venetian, Extremely Mean Jew Shylock Upsets No Plasma
It worked though!
I learnt many volcanoes erupt mulberry jam sandwiches under normal pressure. Only Pluto isn't a planet any more, so I'm out of date!

Oh god I am a dreadful mother,...... whenever someone wants to name the planets in order, I can't help it, really I can't...... the shame.....
Drake and Josh - they sing a crappy little ditty to win a radio phone-in ... " I saw Mercury then Venus, I saw the Earth then Mars...." etc et bloomin c......
Just google Drake and Josh planet song- it really is crappy, but like all crappy songs they stick!! Not that I would ever own up in RL to letting my girls watch that trash of course...
