Anyone deal with CfE report cards?

DSD's parent-teacher conference is today and report card was issued late last week. Her teachers tell us she is making Very Good effort across all subjects, and DH and I are very pleased about that.

The only two subjects her school gives "levels" for are literacy and numeracy. Despite making some progress since last year in both of these subjects, she is still "First Level, Developing" on both of these. It is the same mark she was given last year, in P2 (she is in P3 now - just turned 7 in Feb and is the youngest in her class).

Would you be concerned if it was your kid? Would love to hear from some Scottish teachers too, if there are any. The CfE levels don't seem to be as specific as the English ones; they come across as more subjective according to the teacher's opinion. Which is fine, I am happy to trust her teachers' opinions, but it's kind of a problem if DSD doesn't manage to get to "First Level, Secure" by the end of P4. I think.

I have no idea about the levels but I think if they didn't say there was a problem then she must be achieving what they expect. If First Level covers a few years then I suppose developing is about all they can put unless they have achieved it and this term is a short one because of an early Easter so by the summer she may well have achieved it if it is expected in this year.

Well, we found out her teachers this year think last year's report card should have said, "Early Level, Secure". :( Her teacher believes DSD will probably not be secure in First Level curriculum until after P4. Which is a pain, but! There is good news. She is finally getting support from the school's learning support teacher. Which is something we were hoping would happen, if she was indeed behind the other kids and out to sea with the work - but that was hard to establish at first, because we kept getting told, "Oh don't worry, they all catch up in time". This year's teachers are not treating us like neurotic freaks with impossible standards. They mentioned confidence issues, which we have also seen at home. So, we're all finally singing from the same hymn sheet (for now) and there's no scared bunny look that we're dissatisfied or worried about something.

I find the CfE reports don't really tell you too much and it also depends on how the teachers complete them - there is a lot of selecting standard paragraphs ime. I find the meetings far more useful. I preferred the old style reports I think. It gets worse in High school. we are coming towards the end of 1st year and I have no idea if my son is doing well academically. I know he is working hard (interim report) and I know he settled in well (parents night way back last October) - just hoping the rest takes care of itself. :)
