Wizardology's a hit with my 8 year old.

YY to Chrestomanci, and also to 'The Dark is Rising'.

Try Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Not really wizards, but folks with magical powers still.

How about The Hobbit?

Ursula le Guin's Wizard of Earthsea books?

Magic thief by Sarah Prineas (trilogy ) is excellent. So is Dragonborn but a step up from beast quest. Then Annie Sage's Magyk series. And of course HP

The Worst Witch series? I'm saving that for DS, so he has a full range of hero-types in his reading life!

YY to the Chrestomanci books & Charlie Bone

Also My Friend Mr Leakey, perfect for that age (actually, I'd still love to have a friend with a small dragon that would grill fish/make toast grin )

Ben Muzzy (apprentice wizard) books are great, used to read them to Y3 and Y4 - this is the first one.

Charlie Bone books are good - not exactly wizards, but people who have magical powers.

Susan Cooper The Dark is Rising

Try the Kane chronicles. Egyptian magicians rather than wizards but v similar. DS1 loves them.

Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones.

Does he like the Greek myths? They're pretty magical, and he'd meet mythical creatures like those in HP!
