Part of every schools allocated budget is assigned to sen; it is up to the school to allocate how this is used. It sounds like your son has a need that they should be addressing. There is also the possibility of TAPS funding if his case is considered urgent enough.

'Tis the curse of not having a statement to waft at school that TA support is random and arbitary.
I think it was Mrz that said that her school only has 1 TA.
Does his teacher have a class TA? I would have thought that the class TA could be offering some 1-1 support or group support in year 4? It's not like the earlier years where a large % of the class need keeping on task. Unless the teacher doesn't have one, or uses them for photocopying biscuit, you could have a word and ask for more support until you get your statemented hours.

Sorry pressed to soon....I supose What i am trying to say is he had a little bit of 1-1 last year but now that TA is asigned to a statmented child and there is no more "free"TA's and he knew that 1-1 was helping him .

Sorry really waffeling now ...and I cant even blame the "grape juice" !!!gringrin

Oh I forgot to say ....school were putting me off/delaying an S/A but now that the comm pead has said it should be done SENCO is happy and said she has a good track record of getting them through .....She also advised that I request it.

He is on SA+ since yr3 but he needs 1-1 to go back over the basics that he "missed" while in a big classroom setting of previous years....poss infomation overload and nothing goes in ?

There is a "dedicated" SENCO at our school ie non teacher who does 2 & a 1/2 days..but I cant't understand why it is only me concerned that he is a 2b(a on a good day) in yr4 ???

It is an "good" i think school(ofsted) and last years SATS rsults were the best ever ..all 4 and 5 even SEN (no 3's).

He has lots of other issues as well that I have to explain to them about ..and yes the pushing and nagging is tiring and in fact a bit depressing ....because if I hadn't done all that i have done so far ...well he would just be left on the scrap heap..

Still he is my last one ..so if I leave the school with the reputation of.."thank god that pushy mother has gone" ....well so be it grin

DIdnt get any support for DD till year 5 & even then it was another person's TA who was there to nudge DD along. Proper support came along when she was 15 & finally diagnosed with severe dyslexia. Seems because she could read & write & spell her previous schools felt she didn't have dyslexia but there you go. DS received help from year 7 & is now in year 12 taking his AS levels & talking about applying to Oxbridge. Just goes to show that those bright offspring of ours can sometimes find ways to cope in spite of learning needs.

Keep nagging the school! It's sometimes the only way to get things done & even then they don't always listen.

Unfortunately, primaries (unless huge) don't really have SENCOs it's just a hat one of the teachers gets.
(our old head wore it and it didn't fit. She was a great head, but not proactive in spotting DCs who needed help).

I get the feeling senior school SENCOs try, but small numbers of DCs take up huge amounts of time. Also huge focus on Y11 because of league tables.

On the statementing you don't need your school's permission so if they're dragging their feet just go directly to your la.

To add insult to injury when we nag we get labelled as pushy parents.
The sad part is we have to fight for our kids to get the help they need, and that the system claims to freely give. It adds a level of exhaustion.

But the whole point is we shouldn't have to keep nagging to get our children the support that they need.
I am sick fed up with haranguing and harassing people to do the jobs that they are paid for.
I have many friends with SEN/SN children - as I have myself. I do not think I know 1 child that has been given support without this constant nagging.
What sort of society have we become that he who nags most gets an education for their child.
Sorry - rant over! - back to the nagging grin

Nag, nag and nag again. Speak to the SENCO..get a referal to the doc. Keep trying, there can be help even for small problems, if you speak to the right people. The schools SENCO should be able to refer and advise. Good luck and keep pushing, any help is better than nothing!

I had a SN Brownie and I remember being so pleased when she did a butterfly collage by herself.

She snatched it off me and screwed it up.
"it's not good their wings are both the same" she said

So impossibly difficult knowing your not the same as your class mates.

I really hope they find your DC proper help.

I have been where you are although my son has ADHD/asd and sadly the only way to get help is to continually nag, harass and not take no for an answer. I was on the telephone daily to the lea and would not let them fib me off (even resorted to recorded delivery of letters and quoted time when they had received them when the office claimed not to have got them). I involved my local mp and every agency possible (parent partnership, sen, camhs). Sadly it is a fight to get additional help but a fight worth keeping up.

I know I have posted before on this sort of suject ...but DS has just asked me tonight when he will get the "other help"...so he can do the the same as the "the others" (peers)

He is a clever enough boy to know he is behind ....and that he is not getting enough help..
I am going to start statementing ...but what do you do/say to a "bright"boy who just cant read and write ??
