I am just wondering we are moving into a new area and appealing for a place at school which could take some time. What do we do in mean time for education??????

I was always under the impression that an LEA had to offer you A place at a school within their area which discharged their legal obligation, so you basically start your child in a school which you may not want but at least they are in school and you wait for a place at a school you want and move them when you can, or you home education until an acceptable place becomes available.

Having read some threads on here though it seems that in some areas of London no places at all are being offered - not sure if that's just the case for reception places though.

I homeschooled DS2 (Y3) when we moved to Oz as there wasn't a space in his year at the school I sent his siblings to. I thought he had had enough upheaval so really didn't want to start him anywhere other than this particular school and it worked out really well (we did it for 6 months).

The first thing to do is apply to the LA for a place at your preferred school. The LA must offer you a place somewhere. It may not be at the school you want but they can't leave your child without a school. If you are unhappy with the allocated school you can appeal but your chances of success depend on whether or not infant class size regulations apply. The appeal must be heard within 30 school days of the appeal being lodged.
