how common is it for four year old boys to get bumps/bruises at school?

i only ask as ds1 started school sept
and has had 3 bumps to the head since then, 1 minor, 2 quite bad. Each time school have phoned me and accident form filled in.

This didnt worry me til i was chatting to my mum and mentioned this when she said "hmm, 3 times in 4 months makes you wonder...". Wonder what? She wouldn't explain herself so i just had to end the conversation because it was making me too upset thinking what she was wondering e.g bullying, school lying etc.
Does this sound totally normal and my mums "wondering" for nothing? Please reassure me!

How does the school and your son account for the injuries?

My DS was a complete whirlwind very boisterous at that age and it wasn't uncommon for him.

Mine seems to be covered in bruises on a weekly basis also. Not so many on the head though.

today he was running v fast and tripped over his own feet, other times he slipped on a brick and fell after jumping. He says what ta says. I just asked if any one pushed him and he said no. All seems innocent but my mums comment put me in a panic. I said its only 3 times in 4 months and she said "3 times in 4 years maybe".

There is always at least one parent signing the accident book at hometime at our school.

Ds bumped his head again yesterday.

You'll notice some quite nasty bruises on their knees at bath time when they're in long trousers! They'll look blankly at them, then might invent a colourful imaginary explanation!

You'll always find other parents in the playground who believe school is one huge conspiracy.

My super girley 7 year old has had more than that since September we had a month fo 1 week she got a bruise/bump the next week her best friend did and each time the story started "well best friend and I were" and right now when I hear that I take a deep breath waiting..

4 yr old bys don't look where they are going, don't look or think about what they are pushing each other into AND like playing "superhero" games that involve diving to the floor and or over benches.

DS's teacher did manage to work out that the broad red stripe on DSs scalp did not correspond to the bump he got from being pushed into a wall. At end of day she checked with me and was happy that my tale of coloured hair for a party tied up with DSs.

DS (4.75) has had two "I bumped my head today" stickers this week alone! Entirely normal.

DS is Y1 now and almost 6. We are WAY down on lasy year as have only had 4 accident reports since September... anyone would think he had worked out where his feet were ...

There are usually 3-5 children in the accident book at home time, everyday.

It's not just boys either
My DD started reception last term & over the term we had (IIRC) 4 "bumped head" letters & and 6 "we did 1st aid on your child" letters (all were for cleaning up grazed knees/shins/elbows & applying plaster where necessary)

However she has been known to "fall over" leaves and feathers on the pavement before now (at least that was her excuse!) so no suprise really!

My 22mths son has been more to the 'nurses' room at dd1 school then that, and he only goes to play & stay for 90mins on a Friday morning .

As for dd1 when in reception she had an accident form most days, mainly for walking/running into the 6inch round post on the slide in the playground.

I used to worry if a week went past without at least 1 form.

DS1 is permanently covered in bumps, bruises and scratches. He bumped his head one day and was pleased to report he was given a lollipop to take the hurt away!
I've never had to sign the accident book though, maybe I should ask, I bet he's got a chapter to himself!

Have you ever observed an Infant School playground during break-time? They all run about madly in random directions, sometimes with no discernable purpose. It's exhausting to watch! Collisions and bumps are totally par for the course.

Even at 11, 9 and 7 my DCs each come home with grazed knees and bumps on the head at least twice a term.

My dd and her mate have had black eyes, cut lips, cut knees, elbows and hands, bumps to the head....it's ok.

Personally I find it a bit worrying that so many children do not have legs covered in bruises and grazes these days. Suggests that they are not moving around as much as they should.
