What might confuse you is that some schools have nurseries attached. They're usually 3+ with a September intake (in our area - I think there are differences) so then you're son could start at nursery this September.

Again, here he would have started nursery school in September 2010.

They start nursery school here at 2.5 and reception at 4, and there are 3 intakes a year for both.

The best thing is to check with your local school/nursery/LEA.

If you are in England he can start in September 2012 and must start by Easter 2013 (i.e. the start of term following his 5th birthday). You will need to apply this time next year for a place in Reception. This applies everywhere in England so you don't need to ask your LA.

As your daughter was born in January, her entitlement to 15 hours per week free nursery education starts on 1st April. However, she won't start school until the September following her 4th birthday so, as you say, she will be 4 yrs 9 mnths when she starts school.
