Know I should't compare but a little concerned about ds's reading. So just wondering what book band you ds were at this stage in year 2. Or teachers what is average?

DD1 - Gold? (Searches memory...)

DD2 - Lime/brown.

Does he enjoy reading? Is he making progress?

happycamper1 Mon 17-Jan-11 13:50:45

Yes, does enjoy it. Reads very slowly and carefully. Seems to move up one level per term. This worries be a little as will only be on purple by end year.

I've taught Y2 and at this time of year there is usually a range from Orange up to White.

happycamper1 Mon 17-Jan-11 14:09:54

That fab tigerlion. Thank you. Would you expect children to go up one level per term?

namechangesgalore Mon 17-Jan-11 16:52:27

I think at that stage yes the norm in theory is one level a term but it does vary so much. Also after Purple I think it's longer for each band normally but a teacher should be along soon to clarify!

happycamper1 Mon 17-Jan-11 17:09:08

I think that maybe he stayed on on lower levels for too long. Only semmed to be tested once per term in his class in year 1 and the same in year 2. Not sure if thats the norm in schools.

I don't test before moving children onto a higher band and some will be on the same band for a term or longer and others will move up more often

happycamper1 Mon 17-Jan-11 20:13:47

My understanding is that they are only listened to termly in year 1 and 2. Each time ds is listened to he is moved up one level.

mrz Mon 17-Jan-11 20:44:52

Once in 13 weeks! hmm

FlorenceAndTheMachine Mon 17-Jan-11 20:49:59

DS has various books on different levels. A gold (ks1) which is also brown (ks2) one. Also says stage 9 on it. A brown (ks2) one which also says stage 10. And one with a White sticker on it that is stage 11.

He can read fine and I am happy.

Does he do a guided reading session each week with children of a similar ability? What band book are they reading then? My DD reads with the teacher twice a week in guided reading sessions, once within her class and once with a couple of children from the other class; If I think she has come to a bit of a stop I mention this to her (Fab) teacher who re-assesses her and moves her on accordingly.

Could you do the same?

PoppetUK Mon 17-Jan-11 20:51:08

I was absolutely shocked when we were in Australia that my DD was only listened to once every term. (terms out there are 9-11 weeks without any half term). Since moving here DD gets listened to once or twice per week by a TA and then I think perhaps at least every half term by the teacher. Might even be more.

He says he doesn't but I guess the only way to check is to ask teacher. Although when I asked teacher last year she admitted they listen to the children who are struggling weekly but not the ones doing ok. At that time he was a year 1 in a mixed year 1/year 2 class so wasn't struggling at that time.

happycamper1 Tue 18-Jan-11 11:48:27

Oops yes they do do guided reading in groups.

lovecheese Tue 18-Jan-11 13:32:29

What level is he reading at then?

happycamper1 Tue 18-Jan-11 13:51:49

Just gone up to turquoise which is about ort 5 or 6. Don't know what they read in GR sessions. Will need to probe a little further I think.

lovecheese Tue 18-Jan-11 14:19:34

Sorry, meant in the GR sessions hc1

happycamper1 Tue 18-Jan-11 14:56:36

Sorry wasn't sure what you meant. I tried to find that out but ds was vague.
