Farnham Area Private Schools Help Please!

Hello,

We are moving from Scotland to the Farnham area (DH has new job based in Farnham but we are hoping to decide on school before house).

Could anyone offer some thoughts on private schools meeting the following criteria:

  • DD is 8 and we would like a school which goes right through to seniors if possible
  • Not too posh! We are looking for a nice school but not too full on if you know what I mean!
  • DD is bright but not overly academic. We would like somewhere where she would be supported and pushed to reach her potential but not somewhere where all the kids are super bright.
DD is fairly quiet and this move is going to be a big deal for her. Current school is lovely, pretty small but with good facilities. Teachers know all the kids really well. We would be keen for something similar.

I know I am asking a lot but hopefully from the above someone will get a feel for what we are looking for.

Someone had mentioned a school called Manor House School? Does this mean anything to anyone?

Also, as I said, Farnham is the only "fixed" thing so far in this move but we would be happy to live anywhere up to about 30 - 40 mins from here. We don't have a massive budget for a house but hopefully can get something that will be fine for us. If anyone feels like offering advise on areas to live it you are not mega rich then please feel free. Guildford looks nice but I'm guessing expensive too!

Hopefully the curricumum in Scotland isn't too far off England. That's another worry.

Thanks for any help offered and Merry Christmas to all.

Manor house is in Effingham/Bookham, so quite a way from yor area. I would look at Priorsfield or Royal School for seniors. Tormead, GHS and St Catherines are a bit more high flying. You could also look at Frensham Heights, which is quite alternative.
However do also look at State schools there are some lovely ones in the Godalming/Farnham area: Chandlers, Waverley Abbey and South Farnham to name 3. There are also good State schools in Guildford too.
Or you could live somewhere like Normandy (village near Guildford) and use Rydes Hill Guildford followed by Farnborough Hill, Farnborough (both Catholic but lots of non-catholics use them).

At 8 I would not worry about the curriculum diferences, plenty of children arrive older than that not even speaking English, and do very well.

State education in Farnham is excellent: South farnham is one of the top juniors in the country. Waverley abbey is also right up there. Both feed into Weydon - one of the top secondaries in the country, getting results that are better than many private schools.

Private:
For youngsters, look at Barfields and Edgeborough.

Secondary: Salesians (boys) & Farnborough hill (Girls). Also Gordons in Woking area - if you can get in. Lord Wandsworths is also very well thought of. Royal Grammar School in Guildford.

You will get much more for your money in terms of housing in Farnham rather than Godalming or Guildford. There isn't that much choice in Farnham for private schools although the state schools are good.

It sounds like St Hilary's in Godalming could be ideal for your girl - many go off to Prior's Field (well rounded girls school) at 11 or St Catherines Bramley. St Catherine's quite posh though. GHS and Tormead like St Catherine's go all the way to 18 but are highly academic, both a bit of a trek from Farnham but people do it.

Barrow's Hill in Witley may be worth at look at also, co-ed catholic school.

Good luck its not easy the school/house move I'm in the middle of it and I haven't found it fun mainly as its difficult to find a house.

Thank you all for you help so far. I have looked at the websites and there are some real possibilities so I have sent for details.

Does anyone know anything about St Nicholas School in Fleet?

Also, does anyone have any idea how likely a place would be at these schools for DD to join in Sept 2011 into Yr 4? I suppose we would be relying on people leaving but perhaps the schools are not over subscribed?

Thanks again!

There was a thread about St Nicholas a few weeks ago, you could search for it.

If you are looking for an area which is less expensive, Alton and surrounding villages are nice and the state schools are good, it's about 15 mins drive to Farnham and on the train line. Alton Convent (private) is co-Ed for juniors but girls only for seniors.
