At what comprehension level do they change reading levels?

Just a random out of interest question. DS is doing well in his reading but has been on the same level all year. He has now done over 25 books at this level. He can read the words and can sound out unfamiliar words nd get them right. There is the odd word or two that he doesnt know, but never more than two per book. He then successfully uses picture clues to figure out the word. His comprehension is great and he laughs t the jokes/tricks in them. We also do the exercises at the end of the book and he invariably gets them right straight away.

I was just wondering if he should go up a level? I did ask his teacher, who said he was doing well and reads 'with expression' but she wont move him up. We wrote once in his book the other week that he had found it easy - she then wrote that he had needed to sound out words in the next book..and sent a different book again home so we didnt even SEE the one he had apparently needed to sound out!

I was wondering if it is because he hasnt completed all the books at that level (FFS how many are on each level??) and he has to do all of them, or if they dont like too wide a spread of abilities in one class (can understand this as some children re just starting out sounds nd I feel for the teacher having to differentiate so widely - must be so hard!!)

I take him to the library and he picks out harder books to read there so I am not overly worried or anything. He just asked himself when he would get 'better books' and often tells me they are easy. I just told him well that is what the teacher gave you so lets do that then we can read another book together :)

I wouldn't get stressed about it. My dd is in year 2 and has been on the same reading level all year. She is really good at reading, can sound out most words and has great comprehension. Tbh I mostly ignore the school books anyway, you can only take so much biff and kipper.

As long as your ds is reading a wide range of books at home, the levels don't matter. Dd was quite reluctant to read longer books but has discovered horrible histories/science and Roald Dahl books and loves these.

It's odd actually, she started on level 7 in reception and now has been on level 10 for about a year, infact the last few books she has brought home have been level 7 again Hmm.

I was going to bring it up with her teacher but tbh I just don't think it matters.

Could it be that when he reads with the teacher he doesn't do as well as when he is with you ? Perhaps he's not as confident?
