My youngest dd is 8 yrs old.She is currently being assessed as she shows most traits of Asperger's Syndrome. The school don't seem to be helping her much with her writing. She will put a capital T,B anywhere in her writing. Also she doesn't leave finger spaces, spells words how you pronounce them,b and d the wrong way round. When writing a j the tail goes the wrong way.Her numbers 9 is a p sometimes p is a 9.What can i do to help her at home. She says she hates writing and its to hard. Thanks in advance.

I found with my 10yr-old (ASD) that it helped a lot when he started to do joined-up writing. It's much harder to do the letters back-to-front that way because you don't really have a choice about where to start the next letter.

It also helps his writing when he has a sloped surface to lean on. Even using a ringbinder to lean on made a difference. It took some of the pressure off his hand/wrist and improved his positioning.

Another option is to learn to touch-type and let your dd do her written work on the computer. It depends on how willing the school is to allow this.

Does your dd have an IEP with targets set for her to work towards? If she does then I would push for at least one of the targets to focus on her writing. If she doesn't then I would speak to the SENCO about having an IEP put into place for her.

Misty - my son (10) with Aspergers is pretty much like this. A lot of people with Aspergers also have dyspraxia and sensory processing disorder.

We have been working on those things first.

So he does nightly OT to improve his hand strength and his core strength - because while handwriting is physically too hard for him it won't improve.

We have also been working on improving his visual perception problems.

Now that we've made some progress with those underlying difficulties school are starting to get him to do daily handwriting practice and also are teaching him touch typing.

Write from the start, Speed Up, and Handwriting without tears are all handwriting interventions that might help and that do address underlying problems...
