have just been to ds parents eve. The teacher told me that she was happy with his level of speech and vocabulary but had found that he was below average in his understanding and knowledge? I had to sign a form to get him some extra help. I was a bit taken aback and signed form, didnt really ask any questions. Can anyone tell me about these assessments and "extra help" please. I am at work until monday so wont get chance to talk to the teacher until after half term .She did tell me not to worry but i am doing.

The extra help is obviously nothing to be worried about and is a good thing.

Do you think you signed an IEP? (individual education plan - something like 3 targets and what support they'll be given to meet them..)

thanks, it was a request for some kind of service that the school can tap in to if needed. I think he is just a young 4 and will suddenly develop, just going through the guilt thing of " have i given him less attention than the others" thanks for reply.

I really don't want to alarm you - but make sure you specifically ask the teacher if he has been placed on the SEN register.

Only, I didn't realise when I was asked to sign something that it was an IEP that they had done because they had placed DS on the SEN register. They never told me....

The reason you shouldn't be alarmed is because it doesn't matter whether he's on the SEN register or not. It doesn't mean anything except that he's getting extra help...

I just have a feeling that if he is getting extra help there's a good chance they have put him on the SEN register... And if so you should know.

But this is just my experience. Your school might be totally different....

Or it might just be an early intervention programme ...

Knowledge and Understanding of the world is the early years equivalent of "everything else" covers history, geography, science etc. did the teacher mention anything specific here because this is a really good thing to be doing at home, e.g. if it's mini beasts or nature you can explore a local park.

if it was me i'd just pop in and ask for more specifics so you can support learning at home. i think of it as the exploring side of learning which is really fun!

It doesn't soound like Knowledge and Understanding of the World when outside agencies have been involved but it could be SaLT to check on understanding. I would recommend making an appointment to discuss it with the school.
If outside agencies are involved it usually means the child will be SA+ on the SEN register which isn't anything to worry about.
