Year 2 reading question

DS has just started in Year 2 and he is not getting the Ginn reading books that he had in Reception and Year 1 anymore. He can choose a home reader to bring home to read to us. He brought a book home tonight which was quite difficult which he read well but as he was going through the book there were obviously some words that he can't read yet and they are not words that he can sound out (one example is the word "neighbours"). Do I say the word for him as he gets to that word in the book or try and get him to figure it out on his own? Is it a case of if I say it for him he will remember that word for next time he sees it?
I'd say he is on the verge of becoming a free reader so any other reading tips to just help him along would be great.

I would explain that the "eigh" is an alternative to the "ay" and "ai" he will probably already know and similarily with the "our" part ( although I'm not going to do that one as it depends on your accent, for me it is the "er" sound, but it might not be for youGrin

I would teach "our" represents the /er/ sound too spanieleyes.

I would expect both "eigh" and "our" to have been taught in Y1

you might find it helpful for explaining alternative ways of writing sounds if he hasn't been taught

Actually "neighbour" was a bad example really. He was taught that sound in Y1 I'd forgotten. I'm asking really what about words and sounds that he wouldn't have been taught in Y1?

He should have been taught all the alternative ways to represent the 44 sounds in Y1 and once he knows them he should be able to read any word (unless in another language)

I would get him to try to work it out on his own but help him by telling him what any unusual letter combinations are. So in the example of neighbour I would ask him the first sound, which he presumably knows is 'n'! then tell him that the eigh makes an a sound then ask him the next and explain the last sound if necessary and then ask him to put them together to sound out the word. Incidentally this is not based on professional teaching experience but by how I helped my DS1.
