free reader Yr1 report says level 2b

My DD has always been a great reader. in reception we were told that she was a Yr 3 level and this year the same has been said - Yr3/4 and she is now a free reader in the classroom. She has excellent comprehension and is able to read aloud with good skill - all of which have been worked on in her time in Yr 1. I don't understand why she has been given a mark of 2b for this though - it was 2c on mid year report. Seems strange to me.
Especially when the school have said themselves she is way above that!
Any ideas?

Oh. when I saw the title I was thinking "maybe her comprehension/expression etc is lacking" but apparently not.

Her teacher at parents evening just said all great, free reader now, comprehension good and that way ahead of her age. Only problem is finding challenging age appropriate books. That she has come on well with expression and understanding as that side of things as they weren't so good at the beginning of the year. Not just me that is puzzled then! Seems that they are saying one thing but for some reason don't want to write it down. What would a level 3c for example require of them?

I maybe being cynical, but the highest most schools assess at in yr2 is a 3 (no sublevels) and as they have to show progress between years it could be that they have assessed your DD as a 2b to ensure that she will show progress in yr2?

My DD was in the same position in yr1, but her school decided to assess her against KS2 in yr2 as well as KS1. She sat the extra paper and acheived a 5 on the paper and a 4+ on the teachers assessment. We did not know that she had been put in for the KS2 until we got the results. Maybe you could ask your DDs school if they could assess her against KS2 next year?

I have heard of that too swarski, that teachers may deliberately lower the level in order to show progress next year

not cool!

hard to address it if you feel that's what's happening though!

although to some extent does it really matter if she's doing well and is suitably stretched at school?

It doesn't really matter, I was just intrigued really as it makes no sense! Good idea to ask them to assess at KS" next year though, makes sense.
