Your DDs 9-12 how regularly do they shower?

My DD, currently 9 showers twice a week.

I know opinion on daily showering varies greatly but I don't want to end up being the mother of a teen who just wont get in the shower at all.

I wonder if getting her into the habit of a daily shower now will help it become the 'norm' by the time she reaches her teens and I will be less likely to face a battle...?

Thoughts, please. smile

My 9 yo showers twice a week

My 11 yo showers alternate days and after sports

PandaG Sat 29-Jun-13 18:24:09

DD (11) showers between 2/3 times a week, but I am encouraging her to shower more, especially after dancing.

Beamur Sat 29-Jun-13 18:24:30

My SC's were vile at this age - needed to be reminded to shower otherwise they just didn't! Fast forward a couple of years and they monopolise the bathroom...
I think every couple of days is ok generally or after sports. Depends a bit on puberty too - once they hit that they need more frequent showers or get a bit whiffy.
Many people will disagree with me, but I don't think daily showers are worth fighting over.

HouseAtreides Sat 29-Jun-13 18:26:15

Couple of times a week. If she comes in sweaty (PE last thing for eg) then I gently say "Shower" and make it friendly but not optional! smile

toolatetobed Sat 29-Jun-13 19:18:49

My nearly 10-year-old DD has a bath every other night.

Eyesunderarock Sat 29-Jun-13 19:21:02

DS a bath a night, DD a shower daily. They still do, both adults now.
It became the norm for them.

DS2 (11) has a shower every night. Sporty type and starting to smell a bit 'manly'.

Snorbs Sat 29-Jun-13 19:36:36

Pretty much every night.

Startail Sat 29-Jun-13 19:37:27

2-3 times a week about the same as her 15y sister. I honestly don't know, periodically damp children appear to say good night and damp towels appear on the floor.

No one here showers everyday, and only very rarely does any one shower in the morning (except me).

So long as people's hair looks clean and no one smells I really don't get the point of the huge time, water, wasting, stress causing rigmarole of daily showers.

Startail Sat 29-Jun-13 19:38:41

I should add damp towels are supposed to go on the radiator, but that is completely beyond my family.

HoneyDragon Sat 29-Jun-13 19:39:16

Ds (10) showers every morning.

He usually has a bath to as dd makes him get in with her for entertainment grin which I encourage as it gets me out of bath time duty

ReginaPhilangie Sat 29-Jun-13 19:44:57

DD1 (10) showers (or has a bath) everyday. About a year ago she started to get a bit smelly after school/in the morning, so I figured puberty was just around the corner and wanted her to get into the habit of daily showering.

LIZS Sat 29-Jun-13 19:46:04

2-3 times a week here

CPtart Sat 29-Jun-13 19:48:02

Daily bath or shower, but lots of muddy football!

Picturesinthefirelight Sat 29-Jun-13 19:58:28

Dd is 11 and showers twice a week.

DS is 9 and showers daily as he doesn't like washes.

BellaVita Sat 29-Jun-13 20:00:10

Shower every day and sometimes twice!

Never ever had a problem with this.

WhereMyMilk Sat 29-Jun-13 20:00:55

Every evening before bed, but sometimes will find a damp child wandering around in the morning or will find myself with company in the shower!!!

Bluestocking Sat 29-Jun-13 21:03:14

My DS (9) showers most evenings before bed - I'd say six nights out of seven - he only skips a shower if the evening's run away with us and it's got too late.

morethanpotatoprints Sat 29-Jun-13 21:07:14

Most nights, definitely 5-7 more sometimes. She is 9 and obsessed atm, but at least her obsession means she's clean.
Beautiful pretty smelly stuff was what started her obsession. grin I have known her shower 2/3 times a day if she has a new smelly thing to try.

clippityclop Sat 29-Jun-13 21:11:07

8 & 11, and supposed to shower Mon Wed and Fri but hit and miss. Putting in a second bathroom before they hit their teens!

Ledkr Sat 29-Jun-13 21:16:15

I'm just starting to encourage more showering for dd11 as I thought I caught a whiff of onion arm pit after dancing one day.
Not easy though is it? Dirty tikes. grin
She likes to get in the bath with her toddler sister tho so that notches up a few more.

bishboschone Sat 29-Jun-13 21:38:42

My 9 year old dd has a bath or shower and hair wash every other night. She is very resistant to it and brushing teeth but I make her . SHe is pretty active and will smell otherwise .

AndiPandi Sat 29-Jun-13 21:42:58

DD 12 showers every morning and washes her hair most mornings too and has done for the last couple of years

Mrsrobertduvall Sat 29-Jun-13 21:45:39

Every day...sometimes twice if sport played.

ZZZenagain Sat 29-Jun-13 21:47:23

dd (12) daily.

Fairylea Sat 29-Jun-13 21:48:41

Twice a week ish for dd aged 9.

And that's with A LOT of persuading!

If it was up to her she would never shower. Ever.

MurielHeslopp Sat 29-Jun-13 21:56:07

Thank you all for your replies. smile

I'm so glad there are other DC who average twice a week too. I always wonder if I'm a bit 'skanky' allowing them to go a few days without a shower. She's not remotely puberty-stage yet though.

There's generally a fair bit of huffing when she needs to have her shower so I dread to think what she'll be like in a few years. Unless of course, she turns the complete opposite direction!

valiumredhead Mon 01-Jul-13 10:38:44

Ds is 12 and he showers every morning and washes his hair which gets greasy if he doesn't.

Atm because of Hay Fever he has a quick shower before bed too to get the pollen out of his hair.

Madmog Mon 01-Jul-13 14:39:49

At 9, my daughter was only having a bath or shower about twice a week as well. She never wanted to, but I insisted and said that was the minimum. Luckily she has never smelt and her hair (until recently) has always looked clean.

I know they walk about hygiene in lessons at school and recently she's been telling me her friends shower every day and I've said she can have one any time she wants (as I have always done), so more recently at 11 she's choosing to have one once every other day, although, the last week it's been every day - I think she's been getting hot and sticky at school. I think shes just realizing it's nice to feel fresh and clean - long may it last!

NotEnoughTime Mon 01-Jul-13 16:47:27

My 11 year old DS showers every second day.

He moans about going in to the shower but once he actually gets in there I cant get him out and he uses all my expensive shower gel

Turniptwirl Thu 04-Jul-13 21:52:12

Girls can be tempted with sparkly pretty bath/shower stuff

I'm sure I had a bath every evening as a tween/teen and used to read in there. But it's so long ago I may be misremembering. Funnily enough I'm lazier now about it than I was as a kid and if I've not been playing sport and my hair is passable will quite happily skip a shower. I'm gross I know. Just been camping for a weekend where no one showered even after hiking and sports and no one smelled -or I couldn't smell them over my own pong anyway-

CointreauVersial Thu 04-Jul-13 21:58:00

DDs, 9 and just 12, are both soap dodgers, and probably shower 2-3 times a week, and only if I remind them. Both a way off puberty, though.

DS (13) on the other hand is Mr Clean, showers daily, and keeps Lynx in business.

LadyLech Fri 05-Jul-13 02:27:04

My DD (9) showers three times a week - with her hair washed on Sundays.

However, she does a lot of gymnastics and if she trains for a long time / get sweaty, then she'll shower after a sweaty training session.

I've noticed that she has started to become smellier after training, but I think she's a long way off puberty yet.

My 12 YO DD showers every morning. We live in a hot sweaty country so it makes sense.
Last year, in the UK, she would bathe every other day - and lay in the bath till it went cold reading a book.

nooka Fri 05-Jul-13 03:51:03

dd(12) usually showers every other day. ds (14) showers when I tell him his hair is gross, or eery time he swims (sometimes several times a day)

MissMogwi Fri 05-Jul-13 04:41:04

DD1 is 11 and showers every day, she'd probably shower twice if she could. I've had to hide my naice products from her as she will use them all up.

DD9 is a different matter. She simply can't be arsed and has to be ordered in. She has a shower/bath every other day or more if she 'smells like school' grin

DC's are 6, 7 and 11 and shower or bath everyday. They have had showers or baths everyday since they were tiny. DH used to take them in with him when he showered/ bathed but now just supervises in the morning with the two littlies and the older one has just got on with it since he was about 8.

Bunbaker Wed 10-Jul-13 07:33:18

"My 9 yo showers twice a week"

Eww. That is a bit minging. It has been hot here the last few days and DD (12) has had a shower every evening before bed.

MurielHeslopp Thu 11-Jul-13 11:34:35

We've had the heat only for the past week (so after I made this thread)

They've been having daily showers what with the heat and sun cream for the past week.

I was asking generally.

notso Thu 11-Jul-13 11:53:34

My DD is 13 and showers daily sometimes twice a day if she does after school sports.
At the ages of 9-10 she didn't willingly shower, it was only once she started sweating and noticing she would get smelly if she left it too long that she came round to our idea of thinking showers are good.

DS1 is 8 and loathes having a wash/shower/bath, he even goes to the bother of pretending he is having a shower but actually he is sitting on the toilet reading! He wets his hair with a wet comb. He is frankly infuriating.

BloooCowWonders Tue 16-Jul-13 14:29:00

Every night - it's not optional in our house.

Poppylovescheese Sun 21-Jul-13 22:27:10

DS aged 11 has a shower every night

coolcookies Mon 22-Jul-13 19:04:17

Dd 9 usually showers about 2 or 3 times a fortnight. She deliberatly avoids them.angry

bigTillyMint Mon 22-Jul-13 19:37:52

Both DC used to have a bath every night. They now have at least one shower a day, though DD sometimes has a bath. 12 and 14.

coolcookies Mon 22-Jul-13 21:32:46

Dd usually showers twice a fortnight.--she deliberately avoids them-- she is not really keen on showers.

coolcookies Mon 22-Jul-13 21:40:42

I am absolutely shattered. Today was the last day of term at the school dd and I go to. Luckily the class I work in has an air conditioner! Unfortunately I am going to teach a year six class next year. It was very rowdy today. All the kids did all day was watch movies, read and play board games. As soon as it was hometime the kids all rushed out the door except for dd and dd's friend, who had to collect their guitar from it's place in the classroom.

lljkk Mon 29-Jul-13 09:55:50

I'm lucky if 9yo DS baths more than once a week. I am happy with that.

Almost 12yo DD showers & shampoos 2-3x/wk (this is a very recent thing) and goes swimming where she also showers+shampoos 2-3x/wk. She is obsessive about it, and I think it's too much, bad for her skin. She's barely got any curves, not in puberty at all. She doesn't need to.

13yo DS manages 3x/wk. This is fairly recent, too, but he's starting to be more aware that girls might mind.

It's not optional in my house either, all 3dc from 10-15 shower/bath at least once a day.

GraduallyGoingInsane Mon 29-Jul-13 10:07:36

Every night. Hair washing is less often, we tend to do it Sunday nights, Tuesday nights and Thursday nights unless she's got majorly grubby or has had swimming.

Older DDs shower at least once a day - a daily shower is non-negotiable in this house, and they have nice smellies to make it more enjoyable.

mrssprout Mon 29-Jul-13 10:39:42

DD (10) showers every morning but (long) hair washing is less often
