How long does it take for periods to settle down?

DD (11yo) has been having periods for about 8 months or so. First two were all over the place but then settled into a fairly regular once a month routine (which I was surprised about!) But the last 2 have been every 3 weeks instead which is very tiresome. I'm sure this question is a 'how long is a piece of string' one but is there a rough idea of how long you can expect them to take to settle into a regular cycle? (I'm trying desperately not to think that this every 3 weeks IS her regular cycle!)

Between 18 months to a year Blush

DD is 9 months in and her periods havn't settled down yet. They have ranged from 21 to 42 day intervals. She leaves a small case of supplies in her locker at school so she doesn't get caught out.

DDs were like clockwork from period 1.

What were yours like to begin with?

Trip to the GP wouldn't be terrible, if only to put your minds at ease.

My oldest daughter started her period the day she turned 11, we were on holiday in Cyprus and I told her not to worry as it was her first it would only last a few days. 18 days later she was still no her period. It took months to settle down and a full year before they became routine.

My youngest daughter didn't start her periods until she was almost 15 and hers were fine from the start.

I think each child is different, my two girls have similar builds and yet there was almost 4 years in difference from when they both started their periods.

Thanks everyone! Wow, Durham, an 18 day period - your poor DD!

Mine have never been totally regular, anything between 14 and 33 days, which I don't worry about. My DD has had four between 21-24 days and one was 35 days.

My 16 yr old had her first one 2 years ago, but they have never been in a regular pattern.
