I'd say looking at dd & her friends (she was 12 last b/day) it tends to be interest related, IYKWIM, apart from the inevitable tech stuff.
For her 12th birthday dd will be getting some (very small) diamond stud earrings (DH bought them, I wouldn't have) and some new jodhpurs and riding gloves
11th birthday DS2 - tennis racket, running top & jacket, new football goal for back garden
Boys still wanted fab lego kits until at least 13th birthday.Girl wanted toys & frilly things.
Ds2 is 12 next month he wants some tech thing that means he can record his game play on the Xbox and put it on YouTube?!! I need to research..
