Hi, just looking for a bit of advice an thought this might be the right forum to post in. Very sadly my best friend died a month ago leaving 11 and 6 year old DD's. I have a good relationship with both girls and plan to be involved. They also have two Aunties who they see regularly. A couple of people have expressed concern to me about the 11 year old and periods etc. I really don't know if it is up to me to talk to her, obviously it is still very early days since my friends death so if I do may leave it a couple of months, but would hate her to be unprepared. Also think that one of her Aunties will probably do it but not sure and its a bit difficult to ask as I don't know them very well. Don't want to overstep the mark in any way but know that my friend started at 11 so any advice would be welcome. Was considering maybe saying something over the Summer and maybe giving her a bag with some towels etc in case she gets caught out at school but don't know if its my place. Any advice would be welcome.

You've got to ask her dad. Many dads are fine with periods etc and I can see that a bereaved single Dad may feel " I'm her mum and dad as well now.. I can cope with it all for my girls", or he may feel " thank heavens ... some help"!

I bet her mum has already done some of the prep work. 11 is a bit late to know nothing.

As Theas says she may already know it, all in fact she may have started. The first ones in DD's year was at 9 years old.

I think that she already knows and she hadn't started yet when my fried died. May say something over the Summer, tbh wouldn't be comfortable talking to her Dad, when my friend died I was supporting her through her divorce to him and we hadn't been speaking - have recently started speaking for the sake of the girls.
