DD, 12 and periods: vit supplements/iron suggestions please.

DD is 12 and has been having periods for about 5 months - they are very irregular and the last two have been quite heavy. Consequently she feels tired and below par. Do any other mums have any recommendations for a good tonic or vitamin supplement which would help her please? I want to avoid iron tablets as they can cause constipation.
TIA Smile

I haven't tried it myself, but can remember someone recommending Floradix on here. It's a liquid supplement of iron and one or two other minerals/vitamins so would be easier for her to swallow than a tablet.

Hopefully your daughter will settle down, but my friend's daughter had very heavy periods and was having to leave lessons due to leakage. The doctor has prescribed a tablet which she can take at the start of her periods and it helps reduce the flow, so if she does continue to suffer don't hesitate to see what help the doctor can give.

Thanks Madmog. Her current period has lasted about 10 days Sad so I may well need to take her to the doctor.

Hi,

I think that BioCare do an iron supplement which is gentle on the stomach. To be sure, call a branch of PlanetOrganic and ask to speak to the vitamin/nutritionalist. They are usually very knowledgable. If they recommend something you could always try to buy off Amazon, because Planet Organic is expensive.

Flariadix is also good but may cause constipation, but I have found this to be as good as other more expensive brands.

Re other vitamins, my 12 DS had pains in bones which is (according to paediatric consultant) possibly related to Vit D deficiency. We were prescribed Vitamin D and months later the pain has cleared up. You can get Vit D on prescription, it's suspended in an oil base. DS also takes Cod liver oil which is Vit D rich. Try the Seven Seas orange flavour one, as its more palatable.

poor kid, to the doctor for her. That way she can get what she needs free on prescription anyway.

bit late but hope you got an appointment and an answer.

periods should be a minor inconvenience. If they aren't (and 10 days bleeding is certainly not minor!) then time for some 21st century medicine!
