party bags for 9/10 year old girls?

it's dd's 10th birthday this week and she's having around 10 friends to her party

the party itself is fairly expensive and she's had a big present so cash is most definitely not in abundance right now ...

will party bags be 'expected' still at this age? she's the eldest in the year so we've not gone to any other 10th birthday parties yet

I'm loathe to go and buy a load of tat I can't really afford but I don't want to seem like we're being 'cheap'

any ideas? with ds1 at 10 we took some friends bowling - it was more an 'outing' than a 'party' iyswim and ds2 took two friends to a football match so we've not really done 10th birthdays before...

I am really not keen on party bags and so I don't always do them! The treat is the lovely outing/party and a slice of cake to go home with. When the DDs were younger I would buy a book set on the internet and they could have one each to go home with.

I have never done one of those awful little bags full of tat! Hate them!

How about a couple of treats each from those selection bags? Or a lip balm? Claires Accessories had a pack of 10 flavoured lip balms for £6 how about one of those each and a choc bar?

I still do party bags but make them more 'grown up'. For my daughters last birthday (11) we did a cheap funky mug and a pair of socks from Primark. Coupled with a slice of cake and a handful of Quality Street or similar went down very well.

Someone I know made CDs of the party music for party bags? Maybe that and cake/sweet?

I wouldn't bother with typical party bag tat at that age.

Maybe get a set of nice lip balms or nail varnish and split them, if these girls like that sort of thing? (I have twin DSDs and they were totally different at that age)

Bracelets? (or a little bag of beads and some elastic so they can make their own?)

We have just done a party (admittedly for 7 yr olds but my 10yr old loved it too) I can't stand party bag rubbish so instead made sweetie bags instead. The kids loved them and the parents appreciated them more than a bag of tat!
I bought clear cellophane bags from the pound shop along with some ribbon, 3 big bags of haribo type sweets, a bag of chews,a bag of marsh mellows and a bag of lollies. Shared them all out between all the kids bags and tied them with pretty ribbon! Voila! I did 25 party bags for about £7! Sweets will always go down a treat and they looked fab and didn't cost the earth - will do this again in future Wink

Yep, some cake or a few sweets - don't really need party bags!

Face packs, Hair bobbles, Mini notepads, piece of cake and a wash-off tattoo-they also sell a huge book of them in the 99p store. These are the sort of things my 9yo likes and don't cost a lot of money to put in party bags Smile

thanks for all the suggestions :)

I put a lipgloss and sparkly nail varnish wrapped in tissue with 3 funsize (large tub of 50 for £5 from Co-op) for my daughter's friends the other week.

The lipglosses & nail polishes were from Debenhams and multipacks that I split. I got 2 tubs of 10 Ruby ones. The nail varnishes were in packs of 4. They were on 3 for 2 so the whole lot was £28. I had 15 bags to do.

The tissue paper and paper bags (£1.99 for 12) were from Hobbycraft.

15 partybags for £40.
