What do you do ? What is their bedtime, then lights out time?

prob about 8.30, goes up then, faffs about a bit, can read for ten mins, but i like the light to be out just before 9.

if she faffs too much, and it's 9, no reading.

Hulababy · 18/09/2012 20:58

10y DD's bedtime varies. On a normal school night it is between 8-9pm, usually nearer 8:30pm though. If she has a later activity and is in later it is nearer 9pm. Regardless of the time she goes up it is normally lights out around 9pm, although sometimes I forget to go up and remind her!

Weekend nights - hmmm, very very flexible.

Beanbagz · 18/09/2012 21:02

Up to bed at 8.30pm and generally reading until 9pm though sometimes i can hear her wandering about going to the bathroom any time up until 10.30pm (she has problems falling asleep when she forgets to listen to her bedtime meditations).

Weekends - if we're home any time up until 10pm or if we're on holiday much later!

10 year old ds gets xbox turned off at 9pm then he can watch dvd while he goes to sleep....he's usually asleep between 9.30 and 10...and he does share a room with 13 year old ds so its hard for them both to switch off and relax as they constantly argue with each other!!

Snowbell · 21/09/2012 15:49

My DD is 10.9 and we aim for lights out at 8.30pm, but some nights because of activities and her willfulness it creeps towards 9pm. She is not very good at getting up for school at 7.30 and often has to be practically pulled out of bed at 8am, so is sleeping for 11 hours like a much younger child. I do wonder sometimes if other 10 yr olds need this much sleep or if there is something wrong with her! I notice though that she leaps out of bed early on Saturday so as not to waste the weekend regardless of what time she went to bed!

On another note, she is our only DC and I sometimes wonder if I am babying her. One of us will go upstairs to keep her company. If not in the bathroom with her, then nearby to keep her on track. I think otherwise she would spend hours in the bathroom in a dream! She still likes to be read to when she gets into bed, which is fine really, but I sometimes wonder if I will still be reading to her when she is 16!

elvisaintdead · 21/09/2012 21:59

10 year old here is 830 on week days and 9-930 on "normal" weekends, though this is flexibile depending on plans

Stepmumm · 22/09/2012 20:52

Thanks all, i wondered if i was doing lights out too early however it seems 8.30 week and 9 weekend is reasonable

My ds1 is 9 and he goes to bed at 7 and lights out at 7.30! He gets up at 7am for school.

His younger brother needs less sleep but ds1 understands that it isn't about your age it's about how much sleep you need.

Due to peer pressure if anyone asks I've said tell them 8.30 for lights out Grin

sassytheFIRST · 24/09/2012 06:51

In bed by 7.45 week nights, reads till she is ready. Usually asleep by 8.30.

Weekends more flexible but usually asleep by 9 unless special reason.

She needs a lot of sleep.

MoreBeta · 24/09/2012 06:53

8 pm week nights with lights out 8.15. About 1 hour later on weekends.

He only goes this late as he shares a room with his brother who is 12 and goes at the same time.

Pushka2 · 24/09/2012 13:01

I would say between 8 and 8.30

merrymonsters · 28/09/2012 11:22

My DS goes up to his room at about 9.30pm. I read to him for a while and then he can read as long as he wants. He usually turns the lights out by 10:15pm at the latest. He isn't grumpy in the mornings so I don't think he needs as much sleep as some children.

My 4 year old goes to bed at 8pm. My 8 year old isn't asleep until 9.30pm.
I'm a bit surprised at such early nights for 10 year olds.

HedgeHunter · 28/09/2012 17:34

8pm though the faffing is enough to stretch lights out till nearer half past.

BeeBawBabbity · 28/09/2012 17:41

Bed by 9, reads till about 9.30. No change at weekends.

ThePieWhoLovedMe · 30/09/2012 16:51

Goes up at 7.30pm, faffs, reads until 8pm - then lights out.

Weekends is usually around 10pm

Lilyloo · 30/09/2012 16:56

Ds 10 goes to bed at 9 then reads, he always has his light off before 9.30

insanityscratching · 30/09/2012 16:58

Dd 9 goes to bed at 9pm reads and supposed to be lights out at 9.30 but it's often later tbh. At weekends she goes to bed when she wants mostly usually 10.30 but her and her sister are often awake when I go to bed an hour later. She's a real night owl and loves a lie in at the weekends.

DowntonTrout · 30/09/2012 17:03

Wow! DD goes up between 9/9.30.

She can still be faffing about at 10.30! Reading/drawing/making lists.

She is up bright as a button at 7.15.

My friend is famous for altering the clocks so she can get hers to bed early. She actually got them to bed at 6.30 once, telling them it was 8.30, and they just went to sleep! And her DCs are 10 & 12!

Startailoforangeandgold · 30/09/2012 17:14

9 would have been bliss, however we don't get in until 9pm twice a week. So we ended up with 9.30-10pm. Lights out sometimes slipping to 10.30 by the time she'd got DH to read to her.
(she reads beautifully. She didn't need reading to, but she did like the attention.Wink)

Having a night owl older sister Has never helped. Being 3 years younger has never ever equalled any possibility of going to bed any earlier than DD1. Lights out and sleep yes, bed no.

allagory · 01/10/2012 22:43

there was an article in the Times a couple of days ago quoting some sleep institute (Mill Pond) which said 9 3/4hours for a 10 yo.

Hassled · 01/10/2012 22:47

Up at 8.50 precisely, faffing/reading till 9.20.

notsosqueakyclean · 04/10/2012 11:31

beanbagz, I'm curious to know what bedtime meditations are. I have a 10 year old girl who has ALWAYS had problems with getting to sleep. We usually send her off to bed around 9pm on a weekday, let her read for 15 mins or so to relax her, but she is more often than not still awake when we go to bed around 11pm. She defifnitely doesn't NEED as much sleep as her 12 year old brother who goes out like a light and is up before the rest of us, bright eyed and bushy tailed. I worry she's tired at school and has trouble concentrating, but have tried almost everything - baths, milky drinks etc. She is a bit slow to get going in the morning but I just think she's programmed to be a night owl and my son is a lark. Still, would be very interested to hear others' stories and how they've coped.

Bedtime Meditations cd.

It's been a great help as my DD who has trouble switching off at the end of the day. We had been advised by her teacher not let her read at bedtime as it was just stimulating her brain rather than calming it down.

She didn't seem that tired at school as such but she was getting very emotional and often crying hysterically when she couldn't get to sleep (bit like having a baby again).

I have to say that we saw results within a week. She'd always struggled to get out of bed in the mornings but suddenly things got a lot easier. So much that i even agreed to her having one of her music lessons before school this year.

She doesn't use it every night and we've gradually reintroduced bedtime reading but she's still sleeping a lot better than before.

It's definately worth a go.

Lot like Downton Trout.
