committee question

I'm joint chairperson on our pre-school committee and have been for 2 years now.

A one day per week job became available due to maternity leave. We have advertised the job through the playgroup so it is open to any mums who may wish to apply.

I completed an application form, when to hand it in to the playgroup leader who said because i was on the committee i wasn't allowed to apply for any jobs, when i said i was due to finish the committee in the summer anyway so maybe i could finish earlier, she said a chairperson can't finish the chair job until the AGM which is in July.

Does anybody know if this is true? I feel gutted because for 2 years I've put hours & hours of unpaid work into playgroup, now a paid job comes up I can't apply. I am also qualified for the job with an NVQ!!!

A chairperson can resign at either the AGM or an EGM but provided there is someone to replace them.

As you are joint chair I should think that you can resign because there will still be a chair.

Perhaps you could ring the charities commission tomorrow and ask them to clarify if that is the case.

What does your constitution say about the chairperson post being joint? If that is not stipulated in the constitution then I think you can resign but may have to have an EGM to do so (need to give 6 weeks notice I think)

We had a commitee member(vice chair) who resigned last year to take up a post within the preschool.

If you were medically incapacitated they would have to let you go, seems pedantic to me, but will go check the books

I think it is the the posts Chair, secretary & Treasurer that legally cannot be resigned from until a replacement stands up as they are automatically trustees?

Looks like you can resign as long as the committee still has 5 people on it.
As basic is chair, vice chair, secretary, treasurer as long as you have one other post, as you are job sharing you can resign

What if your child is not at the pre-school anymore? And you've been on the committee for almost 5yrs and your own constitution says that you HAVE to give up your post if your child is not at the school.
What do you do if no-one will take up your post?
All our other committee members in the past seemed to move away! Hope it was not just to get out of being on the committee!
