My DD just 4 has recently started a pre-school which is attached to primary school. She was late starting as we recently moved into the area and all of the preschools were full at the time of the move, and she has just been given a place.
At the beginning of the week we were handed a sheet of paper, which gave information of targets which the children should acheive by the end of the school year.
Things like:
~Putting on coat, socks and shoes
~Counting 1-10 and recognising written numbers 1-10
~Learning about first letter of their name, and other words that begin with it etc.
After reading this it became apparent that my DD could do the things listed....I dont think she is in any way amazing or even that advanced, just that she has had alot of one to one attention.
When I had a meeting with the teacher today to discuss how DD has settled. I happened to comment that she was able to do the things listed, as I didnt want DD pretending that she couldnt (esp the shoes & coat, as she pretends to me she can't do it sometimes )! The teachers response was "oh thats ok then, we wont need to do too much with her to get her ready for reception then "
Is this normal practice at pre-school to only do the basics/min of learning so that they are all on one level (ish)?
I understand that the main reason for pre-school is social skills, intro to structured learning etc. I just thought it strange that they dont seem to provide abit extra for those who start pre-school already ticking the boxes IYKWIM.
Thanks in advance
