DS (3) has just started a new nursery school but unlike his old school he stays longer and receives a snack at snack time and a hot, generally 2 course school meal at what would have traditionally been his lunch time. So here is my question, I don't want him to end up having 2 dinner like meals everyday but I am struggling a little in terms of what to give him at the family "dinner" time. He is a good eater and has been enjoying the meals at school but I always feel a bit mean sitting down to a hot meal while he has sandwiches, yoghurt etc. He loves fruit but I'm nervous about giving him a lot of fruit when its close to bedtime (7pm). Any ideas as to the best way to approach things. He gets his hot meal at school around midday and our family dinner time is normally 5:30pm so I am thinking he still needs a small snack in between. Any ideas?

If he's still hungry, why can't he have 2 dinner like meals? Sorry, I don't see the issue?

My dd has hot school dinners and I still make a main evening meal for her and us to eat. Why wouldn't you?

I don't see the issue either. My dc have always had school dinners (from Nursery to Yr13) but have always been ready for our family meal in the evening. It is just nice to be able to justify to yourself on those days when you can't fit in a family hot cooked meal, that i'ts ok, they've had one at lunchtime, but no problem with having one in the evening as well.

Mine have always had two hot dinners. Portions don't have to be huge. We all eat the same in the eve

Great thanks. Maybe I will rethink some of the family meals as these are generally very similar to the ones that he has at school i.e. potatoes , veg , meat etc so he isn't having two very similar meals in a day.

I just try and vary our meals as much as possible - mine choose their school meal on the day so I can never predict if it will be fish, curry, jacket spud, pasta, pizza, roast dinner, sandwich etc at lunch lol. Occasionally they end up with similar meals twice in the day, but as long as two decent healthy ish meals I figure it evens out overall Grin
