Fussing in the evening

My DS for the past few weeks has started becoming very fussy and distressed at the breast at about the same time every evening. It can sometimes go on for a couple of hours, all that seems to help is sitting him up, burping him then switching breasts over and over. He starts off feeding fine, gets upset but tries to carry on feeding and gets frustrated and upset. Anyone else have this? I don't know how to help him.

Hello Cluck. Nice to hear from you. Do you think he could be tired? Our DS fusses in the evening and over food, trying to feed more but is just over tired from forcing himself awake. I have to spend some time getting him to sleep/settle and then he's fine.
Our DS is ok, still feeding a lot and just started ranitidine so we are hoping this will help with his reflux. Sounds like you are doing a great job.

Yes, good point he could well be tired, poor little thing doesn't know what to do with himself and does frantically try to carry on feeding when he's like that.

Mine did this, although he wasn't a preemie. I called it "the witching hours" as they were regular. From around 4pm until just after 7pm. I was told it was to do with the milk producing hormones being at their lowest at that point during the day. He grew out of it pretty quickly.

I resigned myself to it, grabbed a comfy chair, watched crap tv and ate comfort food :)

Yes, think its just a grin and bare it situation. Crap tv and comfort food....the go to coping strategy!

Sounds like it might be reflux. Try to feed him in a more upright position.
