Can anyone give me any positive stories on pvl. Our 32 week little boy was given a head scan as we were leaving Nicu and we were told he has 3 cysts on the left side of his brain. Does anyone have any positive stories about this all I can find on the internet is that this means a difficult future with cp. I am pretty desperate at the moment and looking for some positivity on this situation. Thank you

Sorry to hear you're feeling so anxious and congratulations on the birth of your son. From what I have read, no one can accurately predict how much, if at all, babies will be affected by IVH and PVL. Babies' brains are very good at 're-wiring' themselves as they grow to cope with any damage.
My DS was born at 27 weeks and although he doesn't have PVL, i understand the stress of worrying about your baby growing up.Hopefully someone wi more experience will be able to comment but didn't want to read and run. Enjoy your little son.

Congratulations on getting your DS home, I'm sorry you've had worrying news.
Both of my twins had brain bleeds, DS was grade 1/2 & DD grade 3/4 with slight enlargement of the ventricles due to cysts. One of the neonatologists told us that the brain can do so much to repair itself that it is difficult to predict any outcome. Unfortunately it is 'wait and see' which is the hardest thing to do.
They have just turned 1 (8 months corrected) and so far it is my son that is showing signs of muscle weakness in his arm. They recently had a development check & apart from the weak arm, they are both doing exactly what they should be for their corrected age. It took a while for me to stop worrying, but I told myself that I shouldn't spoil those special baby days by worrying about what could happen. Keep a close eye on his development, but also enjoy him Smile

My 14 year old was dx with cysts on his brain as a neonate.
Born at 37 weeks but undx IUGR so he stopped growing at 32 weeks (ish)
I was worried sick as he wasn't treated as a prem.and we were sent home after 3 days
He was 4.5 Ibs
Sadly due to feeding issues and crap care he was readmitted twice in 6 weeks
Once they gave him abx he picked up and gained weight but it was a very tough time
He is now 14 and great 😁
Towers above me and you would never guess his difficult start
After i requested a repeat scan when he was older His paediatrian (he has asthma) told me that in any given population if you scanned them you would find some with cysts on their brain
He didn't seem at all worried....
Good luck x

Babies born early do have cysts. I rarely cant remember the name, but our son had so many scans (29 weeker) and the ANNP and Consultant saw the cysts and said "they wouldn't be there if he was born on time, it's completely normal".

Although we were terrified, they weren't.
