very very faint line on pregnancy test

starfish99 Sat 14-Dec-13 09:59:38

Just done a pregnancy test and there is a really really faint positive line on the test - can only really see it if I hold up to the light. I think I'm about 7 days dpo. How long does it take for a strong positive to show up?
Desperately hoping to get pregnant...mum has cancer and not long left so would be so good to have some good news for us and for her.
Think i am so hopeful I'm clutching at straws and so worried I'll get my period.

VJONES1985 Sat 14-Dec-13 10:03:22

A strong positive would be from the day AF is due or afterwards. I used a frer and got a faint line at 11 dpo and a very dark one at 13 dpo, when AF would have been due.

HaleyDunphy Sat 14-Dec-13 10:04:43

Mine took until around 20dpo! The best piece of advice I can give you - and I know it's hard - but step away from the sticks for a few days. I tested early too, and had what felt like a long and agonising wait to see if it turned out to be a sticky bean, and not a chem pregnancy (it was a sticky bean!) fingers crossed for you!!!

VJONES1985 Sat 14-Dec-13 10:04:55

Sorry, that last bit was wrong. AF due 13 dpo but my dark line was 14 dpo. I tested three times - 11, 12 and 14 dpo.

Tea1Sugar Sat 14-Dec-13 10:18:02

Vjones are you pregnant?! Congrats! When are you due? I'm 22weeks now with dd2, elcs on 15th April :-)

amandarini11 Sat 14-Dec-13 10:51:16

Your most likely pregnant if there is line even if it is faint. I've done pregnancy tests in the past hoping to be pregnant and convinced my self there was a faint line when there wasn't.
My advise would be to use a first response pregnancy test. You can test form 5 days before your missed period, as I have always done, and it gives you a definite line. Also you can try a clear blue digital it stay PREGNANT or NOT PREGNANT. Good luck and please let us know how you get on

starfish99 Sat 14-Dec-13 10:54:17

Thank you all. Never heard of a chemical pregnancy buthjust looked it up. Will try and put everything out of my mind for a couple of days and test again. It's just so hard!

mssleepyhead Sat 14-Dec-13 12:26:43

I got a very faint line on OV+9 on an internet cheapy. Did the same test 4 times over the next 48 hours and kept getting the same result. Yesterday went and bought proper CB tests and got a clear positive within a minute (OV+10). Today the digital test re reconfirmed it. So yes, those faint lines can mean something!

sharkey1187 Sat 14-Dec-13 20:47:48

I've been through this exact same thing this week, I tested yesterday and had a faint line and again this morning (more obvious, but definitely still faint!). My period is a week late so the hubby and I are taking the approach that it's a positive but accept that it might be a false alarm! Will test again in a few days and see what happens...

Good luck with it anyway :-)

starfish99 Sun 15-Dec-13 10:12:31

Ok so I have no will power! Tested again this morning and got the same faint line - slightly darker this time. Trying not to get too excited! but even if it does end in a CP its the furthest we've got so far.
Let me know how you get on Sharkey! Good luck to you too ::-)

HaleyDunphy Sun 15-Dec-13 11:09:31

If it's getting darker, I would feel pretty damn confident. Congrats!

Showy Sun 15-Dec-13 11:18:54

A line is a line is a line. Internet cheapies are no more unreliable than a CB ££ test. The difference is the price and the packaging. You also find that the cheaper tests are often more sensitive than the more expensive ones. You don't need to pick up another 'proper' test later. They all measure the same thing and that's the human pregnancy hormone. If there's a line, it's finding that hormone. With v early testing you would expect v faint lines in a successful cycle but actually the faintness of lines is often down to a lot of factors and is nothing to do with how viable the pregnancy is.

As other people have said, the real risk with picking up a pregnancy this early is that it can be a chemical pregnancy. We didn't know how common they were until early testing became so accurate.

I'm so sorry about your Mum. We took the decision to ttc after my Mum was diagnosed with cancer and DS was conceived immediately after months and months of losses and struggling to conceive our first child. I was so desperate to conceive so that my Mum had some good news. She had surgery on the day I did a pregnancy test (11dpo) and it was positive. That pregnancy test turned into DS who is 2 now and my Mum is in full remission. I really do hope that you have good pregnancy news for your Mum and that she is comfortable. What an emotional time for you. Good luck and best wishes for you all.

sharkey1187 Sun 15-Dec-13 11:28:28

I have none either... hence testing two days in a row!! it's so easy to focus on it, but hey, if you can't have some hope now when can you.. In 2 days I went from the "if it happens, it will happen, we'll just let nature takes its course.." to comparing the darkness on pee sticks. A big part of me still doesn't believe it can be true but that's where the hope comes in!

I really hope it's the news you want smile
keep us all posted xx

Pinkandwhite Sun 15-Dec-13 14:52:49

I got a very clear positive on 10dpo on a superdrug test. I also tested using an Internet cheapie that was meant to be more positive but the line was actually fainter than on the 'less sensitive' superdrug test.

sharkey1187 Mon 16-Dec-13 12:10:34

I've just been to the GP for antibiotics for an UTI and she confirmed that I am pregnant and has referred me to the midwife. Very exciting day today!

How are you getting on starfish? x

quackojuliet Mon 16-Dec-13 12:13:19

So sorry about your mum. X

starfish99 Mon 16-Dec-13 12:39:23

Sharky that is such fantastic news congratulations!!! Must be great to have it confirmed. Do pleased for you!

Think I'm going to buy another test today and test again. Been having really weird vivid dreams and woke up in the night feeling really sick. Taking that as a good sign.

Will let you know what the next test says!! :-)

EwanHoozami Mon 16-Dec-13 12:41:44

my very faint line is currently pulling all the baubles off the tree grin

sharkey1187 Mon 16-Dec-13 12:49:41

I didn't buy any expensive ones.. I had a convincing result on the tesco own brand test I tried yesterday. It is sounding positive for you too starfish! I've only had a little nausea so far, but the vivid dreams are unreal! Plus feeling the need to walk to the doctors wearing just a t shirt and a pair of jeans...

Sending lots of positive vibes your way x

starfish99 Mon 16-Dec-13 19:56:09

Bought some tests from boots and will test in the morning. Still very early days as must only be 8 or dpo!

Showy - thanks for your message. So glad to hear your mum is in full remission. It is such an emotional time, do much going on and this would be positive thing.

starfish99 Wed 18-Dec-13 09:48:07

Still testing positive and line is getting darker. Does anybody know when most chemical pregnancies occur? Trying to not get too excited just in case....

HaleyDunphy Wed 18-Dec-13 10:32:19

My GP said any time up to around a week after your period is due, so it's just like a late period that you would never have known was a pregnancy.

I was exactly the same as you, I think I tested around the same amount of dpo, and I'm four months pregnant now. I was just cautiously optimistic until around 15/16 dpo when I just thought, "no, this is it". Put it this way - by Xmas next week, you'll probably be on cloud nine.

Mandy21 Wed 18-Dec-13 10:39:10

A line is a line in my experience smile. Got a very faint line at Day 24 of my 26/27 day cycle. The twins are doing very well wink.

starfish99 Thu 19-Dec-13 11:51:18

Just had some bleeding:-( have heard it's quite common in early pregnant but trying to prepare myself for the fact it might be a chem preg. Did anyone else have any spotting?

goodasitgets Thu 19-Dec-13 12:03:55

Yes, around the time my period was due smile

starfish99 Thu 19-Dec-13 12:09:21

Thanks goodasitgets -and yours turned into a successful pregnancy?

goodasitgets Thu 19-Dec-13 12:35:05

I didn't continue with the pregnancy but yes, all scans etc were absolutely fine
My friend bled throughout hers, every month when her period was due, and pregnancy was fine smile

starfish99 Thu 19-Dec-13 12:37:23

Thanks. I'm just so scared. I know I'm being ridiculous and should just try and concentrate on other stuff but just can't take my mind off it when it's something I want so badly. I seriously need to get a grip!!

Rach2801 Thu 19-Dec-13 17:11:41

I've just had the same issue, took 2 boots tests, one said not pregnant and the other a faint line which appeared after the 3 minutes , I then put the test away and when I checked again the line had gone.. Did this ever happen anyone I don't know now if I am or not as the line was there in the pregnant box ??

starfish99 Thu 19-Dec-13 17:21:57

How long after did you recheck it? I had a really faint line on sat which is now hardly visible. Think they do fade over time.

Rach2801 Thu 19-Dec-13 17:55:04

Around an hour after .. But it said on it if theirs a line at all then your pregnant, I just wonder should I now wait 3 days to see if it becomes more prominent

starfish99 Fri 20-Dec-13 07:47:32

I think I might have had a chemical pregnancy. Absolutely devastated. I had more spotting last night and this morning. Plus constant cramping feeling in my lower abdomen all of last night The positive lines on my tests had been getting darker but this morning the line was much lighter. I'm just absolutely gutted. Thought I was going to have the Christmas present ever and now I'm just so disappointed. :-(

Rach2801 Fri 20-Dec-13 08:38:36

Everything I've read says the spotting is normal, go check the doctors ring for an emergency appointment as if there's a line at all dark or faint it means there's something there.. Fingers crossed !!

Monkeyshuffle Fri 20-Dec-13 10:28:37

I didn't want to give you false hope as chemical pregnancies are very common, but I had spotting and cramping the week before my period was due and thought I was coming on, tested when period was 1 day late and got bfp. Also had spotting around 8 weeks as well. Had quite a lot of cramping for first two months. Just try not to worry and retest one little while x

Monkeyshuffle Fri 20-Dec-13 10:31:22

[in a little while]

Bankholidaybaby Fri 20-Dec-13 10:45:43

Don't panic. Unfortunately, a lot of the symptoms of pregnancy also seem to be symptoms of miscarriage and a very high percentage of fertilised eggs just don't make it through the first weeks, usually because they wouldn't have been viable. As others have said, we wouldn't know about them if it weren't for the super sensitive tests.

I was TTC in January. I POAS like a crazy person. My very first test, at 9 days post ovulation, I got a very, very faint line. I tested maybe 2-3 times a day after that for about a week, then once a day for another few weeks. My line got darker and darker and then faded a bit. I had loads of cramping, felt weird, and then at 5 weeks, I bled for ten days. I was miserable - really thought that was it, but I had an early scan at 6 weeks and the tiny heartbeat flickering on the screen that day eventually developed into a beautiful boy, now 17 weeks old and asleep on my lap. Anyway, the point is that I had weeks of worry and hurt. I lay on my sofa for days, paralysed by misery because I thought I was losing the pregnancy. If I had waited until after my period, I would not have worried for so long. There is absolutely nothing you can do at the moment but wait.

Good luck x

Liveinthepresent Fri 20-Dec-13 12:49:39

Hi starfish what a roller coaster ! Just wanted to add my best wishes and agree with PP that all you can do is wait and see - it is so hard I know but it may yet be ok. fWIW - I had a chemical pregnancy and was gutted as although I already had a DD it took a long time first time around.
Anyway fast forward to the next month and I got my BFP - DS now 6 months old. Quite common apparently for it to happen again straight away.
I lost my DDad around this time too so I do know how complicated the emotions are but I hope my story shows that even if its not your month now it doesn't mean you won't get your wish.
Keep us posted and wishing you a peaceful Christmas with your Mum

LumpyBumpyMum Fri 20-Dec-13 13:09:17

Don't give up hope! My first DD I bled really badly! It poured out, and with the amount I really thought we had lost her. Scan 3 days later showed a tiny 6 week baby with a perfect heartbeat. Its possible everything will be ok.

Christelle2207 Fri 20-Dec-13 13:36:48

There is hope! I had light bleeding and cramping 7-8dpo then BFP 9 dpo (didn't test earlier). ds now 4 months.

Christelle2207 Fri 20-Dec-13 13:39:14

Oh and the lighter line could be due to more dilute wee perhaps? Try first thing tomorrow. Spotting is a good sign I'd say, full on red blood not so much.

starfish99 Fri 20-Dec-13 19:07:33

thank you all so much for your help and support. It really makes a difference.
what will happen will happen so just going to try and look forward to Christmas.

sharkey1187 Sat 21-Dec-13 09:47:10

starfish.. Sending you lots of positive vibes and I hope you get the news you want. x

VJONES1985 Sat 21-Dec-13 09:49:20

Tea1sugar - sorry, only just seen your message! Yes, am 5w4d and due in August.

starfish99 Sat 21-Dec-13 13:05:21

feeling a bit more positive this morning. did another test and got the darkest line yet. Still getting a little spotting but very little. keeping everything crossed that this is going to work out ok!

HaleyDunphy Sat 21-Dec-13 13:19:33

Sounds good! The spotting is probably just implantation spotting. Fingers crossed for you!

HaleyDunphy Sat 21-Dec-13 13:20:05

What dpo are you on now btw and when is your period due?

starfish99 Sat 21-Dec-13 13:54:02

hi Hayley. I think I must be about 14-15 dpo. I haven't tracked ov though so that's just based on symptoms. I first tested +ve with the faintest of faint lines last sat (a week ago) and the lines got darker apart from a wobble yesterday ehen ut was lighter. My period was due a coupe of days ago although they aren't that regular. people have said they get spotting around the time of their period so it could be that. Could still be a cp - who knows! Keep everything crossed for me! How are you getting on?

HaleyDunphy Sat 21-Dec-13 13:59:09

I think you're going to be fine, honestly. It's impossible not to think about it every moment, I know, but try to fill your time if you can! I did them every day religiously at 6am for days! My lines were soooo light for so long too, so that's good you've got a nice dark one.

All is well here, almost 18 weeks now and I never thought I'd get to this point. I was exactly the same as you! Fingers crossed but I really don't think you need it.

Americanhoney Sat 21-Dec-13 14:18:00

As the other posters have said previously, unfortunately you have to wait and see, which is unbearable as I couldn't think of anything else. In the end I had the "false" positive tests and then got confirmation of chemical pregnancy. I got pregnant in the next cycle and DD2 is sitting next to me now. DD1 pregnancy was a total breeze but throughout DD2 pregnancy I had lots of dark, small bleeds and period style stomach cramps, no one knew why and I feared every time I went to the loo! I say this to let you know you aren't alone and pls stay positive as it might yet happen! Wishing you all the best.

Americanhoney Sat 21-Dec-13 14:21:45

Also forgot to add that I kept on testing throughout the early stages of my second pregnancy and the lines remained faint throughout. First pregnancy lines were always dark. So for me, the darkness/lightness of the line meant nothing.

Christelle2207 Sat 21-Dec-13 19:04:06

I know its difficult to not test daily but if you test every 2 days, as I did, you will be more likely to see a sustained darkening. The test measures hormones in your wee and depending on lots of factors its concentration will vary a bit day to day

BettyMacdonald Sat 21-Dec-13 19:09:28

Oh best of luck. FWIW I've never had a clearly positive test until I'm about 6 days late. I ovulate around day 19 so think that's why. Keeping fingers crossed for you

I've had period like cramps at the start of every pregnancy (implantation I believe) and with dd bleeding on top of that about the time my period would have been due, which had me fooled. Good luck!

starfish99 Sun 22-Dec-13 14:44:15

hi all. staying positive... still pregnant. I think! just wondered how the timing works... my last af was 16th Nov but I have a 35 day cycle (on average). so if i guesstimate that I ov'd on 7th dec does that make me just over 4 weeks or 5 weeks? think they say your date is from your last af but if you have a longer cycle than the avrg 28 surely that affects how pregnant you are?

PuppyMummy Sun 22-Dec-13 16:27:06

starfish it doesn't matter how long ur cycle is. they will still date u from the first day of ur last period. then when u hav the dating scan at 12 weeks they change the due date accordingly.

I have a short cycle so my due date was 5 days out from what I thought when calculated by midwife. when I had my scan the due date ended up matching exactly what I thought it would be and spot on for my cycle!

Leecarr Sun 09-Nov-14 21:44:18

Hi everyone , wonder if anybody can help me sad can't get off the net and go get into bed although I'm exhausted because I am sooo anxious!! I took a preg test this morning with first urine and there was a very faint pink line (was a thin line) I checked the test the whole day constantly starring at it because I was so uncertain and was praying the line would get darker Lol.. To only come back and stare at it 30min later (which was about 8/9 hours after morning urine and spending my whole day staring at the faint line) to see the 'positive faint line' gone and all that was left behind was a distinctive white positive line with what seemed to be extra darker urine that had leaked on it ?? Could I be pregnant !! I really hope I am

Leecarr Sun 09-Nov-14 21:49:03

Those are the faint lines it was more visible in person

weeblueberry Sun 09-Nov-14 21:54:54

I'm pretty sure any reading the test shows after a certain period isn't accurate - I'm just not sure when that is? I want to say 2 hours but hopefully someone else more knowledgeable will come along and correct me.

All I'm saying is don't worry about anything that happens to the test a certain period after you've peed on it as it might not be accurate.

EmbarrassedPossessed Sun 09-Nov-14 21:56:12

If you had a line within the time limit that the test gives, then it's a positive no matter how faint/thin. If you're unsure as a result of what happened to the line after a while, do another test tomorrow morning with FMU and see if you get another positive.

Leecarr Sun 09-Nov-14 22:02:58

The faint line appeared within the 10 minute mark which the preg test gave.. I sure will take another test tomorrow.. Will upload a pic of the test what it looks like now with the 'vanished line' lol..

Leecarr Sun 09-Nov-14 22:05:41

This is the line that vanished lol

Leecarr Sun 09-Nov-14 22:09:53

After the line dissapeared that's what's left

EmbarrassedPossessed Sun 09-Nov-14 22:13:42

On your first picture that you uploaded I can see a very faint line. That can only happen if you have pregnancy hormones present. It doesn't matter what happened to the test after the time limit expired.

The re-test tomorrow morning will hopefully be clearer.

Leecarr Mon 10-Nov-14 05:27:52

So it seems the morning test I took this morning came back neg sad so gutted!! Although I still somehow feel some hope that I am.. The first preg test with the faint line is a different brand to the one I took this morning with a negative result?.. Been having a lot of what I would describe them as 'stomach aches and pains' in my lower abdomen for the past 2 days !! AF is due in 6 days could it be that I tested to early ?? confused

foxyfemke Mon 10-Nov-14 07:25:12

6 days before you're due is really quite early. Be patient and wait and see if your period turns up. If not, retest.

EmbarrassedPossessed Mon 10-Nov-14 08:18:34

Blimey, 6 days before AF is very early to get a positive. Try and wait till at least the day that AF is due before testing again.

Leecarr Mon 10-Nov-14 11:10:40

I've just been to the doc for a blood test waiting for results fingers crossed and toes crossed although I am very doubtful!!
