True or false? First babies are normally late?

Is this true or false? Usually first babies are due late? And are boys usually lazier than girls for lateness?

ladythatlunches Tue 18-Jun-13 20:09:31

My first was a boy and 16 days late!

MooseBeTimeForSpring Tue 18-Jun-13 20:11:04

My boy was over two weeks late and had to be forcibly evicted after he refused to respond to the notice to leave smile

AuntieBrenda Tue 18-Jun-13 20:11:06

False. DS was two weeks early. And he weighed 9 5. I'm a size 10 and slim hipped. Goodness knows how much bigger he'd have got if he'd lasted another fortnight. I could barely bloody walk as it was.

rowtunda Tue 18-Jun-13 20:11:11

False - I thought this way and was sure I was going to go over due. DS arrived at 38 weeks - a month earlier than I had mentally prepared for!

cupcake78 Tue 18-Jun-13 20:11:47

My first was 5 days over. 39 weeks with second and convinced it won't come till after due date.

I really want to be proven wrong!

The 2 friends I have who gave birth to their firsts most recently were both 4 weeks early, one was a boy and one a girl.

RikeBider Tue 18-Jun-13 20:12:53

I've not heard there's a gender difference, but iirc first time pregnancies for causcasian women are 41 weeks 1 day on average.

TangfasticMrFoxalastic Tue 18-Jun-13 20:13:09

My boy was born 39+4, quite punctual smile

RedlipsAndSlippers Tue 18-Jun-13 20:13:57

DD was two weeks early, waiting to see if the boy thing is true!

cravingcake Tue 18-Jun-13 20:14:58

My DS arrived at 38+4 and 8lb 2oz, and he was fully cooked.

fufflebum Tue 18-Jun-13 20:17:27

Dd born day after due date, just like ds!

snozzlemaid Tue 18-Jun-13 20:18:32

My ds was born at 37+2.
Dd was 37+3.
Midwife said I must cook my babies in 37 weeks.

kissmyshineymetalass Tue 18-Jun-13 20:18:57

My 1st was 16 days early and 6lb 8oz and born just 15 mins after I got to the hospital it was a very quick labour/delivery shock

motherinferior Tue 18-Jun-13 20:19:05

Mine was two days early.

NotSoNervous Tue 18-Jun-13 20:19:07

False DD was almost 3 weeks early

TheCountessOlenska Tue 18-Jun-13 20:19:36

My girl was 5 days late, my boy was 3 days late.

It seems to me (from experiences of friends/family) that first pregnancies go overdue more often than not... but you never know OP smile

littlestgirlguide Tue 18-Jun-13 20:19:40

My first was a girl 10 days late.

badguider Tue 18-Jun-13 20:20:20

Yes. Somebody has already said that 41+1 is the mist common arrival date for first babies born to white British women.

ShoeWhore Tue 18-Jun-13 20:20:33

My 3 boys were all early - 38wks, 39wks, 37wks.

True that they are late more often than they are early, but that still leaves a lot of room for indivisual first babies to be early (mine was 2 days early).

KingRollo Tue 18-Jun-13 20:21:17

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

3 weeks early

Snowflakepie Tue 18-Jun-13 20:23:08

On average first babies are 8 days overdue. Subsequent babies 4 days overdue, according to statistics. So due dates are a whole heap of **.

There will always be exceptions, as with any random event. DD was 2 days early. DS is currently 1 day late. Don't think sex has anything to do with it, and also resent the whole 'boys are lazy' thing. They come when they're ready.

RenterNomad Tue 18-Jun-13 20:24:03

My DS was 10 days early.

Anecdotal evidence has already disproved any "always", but if you want properly calculated probabilities, ask your midwife, GP, the NCT....?

learnasyougo Tue 18-Jun-13 20:24:52

sixteen days late, and even then it took two sweeps and synto drip to get him moving.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman Tue 18-Jun-13 20:25:05

Girl 37 weeks.

Boy 39+6

usualsuspect Tue 18-Jun-13 20:25:33

4 weeks early

JeanBillie Tue 18-Jun-13 20:27:36

False - DD born bang on 36 weeks at 6 lb 15 oz!

False all mine were late and ive 4

bettybyebye Tue 18-Jun-13 20:28:51

My DS arrived at 37+2 - totally unprepared as I fully expected to go overdue as he was my first!

fishandmonkey Tue 18-Jun-13 20:29:23

i was told that on average first babies are born 5 days past due date.
(foolishly planned on dd being late. was totally unprepared when she arrived 2 weeks early)

swlmum Tue 18-Jun-13 20:30:24

DD - born at 36 weeks
DS - born at 34+4

Sleepyfergus Tue 18-Jun-13 20:31:02

Dd1 was born on due date. Dd2 was 5 days late according to official due date, but bang on time according to my date (based on my longer cycle which mw ignored).

Gonnabmummy Tue 18-Jun-13 20:32:15

I was the first baby and I was born at 32.5 weeks shock
But I'm not thinking about that because I'm 30 weeks now and don't want him here quite yet! X

firesidechat Tue 18-Jun-13 20:34:32

1st and 2nd in my, admittedly, limited experience. Both of mine were induced.

firesidechat Tue 18-Jun-13 20:35:36

Oh and both were girls.

IwishIwasmoreorganised Tue 18-Jun-13 20:39:05

Ds1 was evicted at 42 +5 shock

beckie90 Tue 18-Jun-13 20:41:37

Ds1 was induced nearly 2wk over
Ds2 went into labour on my due date but born 5 over

KnittedWaffle Tue 18-Jun-13 20:48:58

DD (pfb) was born at 37 weeks
DS1 at 38 weeks
DS2 at 39 + 4 (those last couple of weeks felt like an eternity and I felt like a beached whale, which is no good with 2 preschoolers - going overdue must be even worse!)

Dillydollydaydream Tue 18-Jun-13 20:51:24

False. My dd was early. Only by 4 days but still early.
My ds was a week late.

Racheld33 Tue 18-Jun-13 20:55:42

False, DS born 4 days early.

Iwish Tue 18-Jun-13 21:03:49

False. My DS was born at 37+6. Xx

mistlethrush Tue 18-Jun-13 21:06:20

My DS was born at 39wks and 10lbs 5oz... Thank heavens he wasn't late!

lilstar Tue 18-Jun-13 21:15:19

My DD was born 5 days after EDD and weighed 5lbs13oz

miffybun73 Tue 18-Jun-13 21:18:01

My first was a boy, I awoke from a deep sleep to find my waters had broken at just after midnight when I was 37 weeks plus a few minutes.

He was born about 6 hours later.

Jo1984uk Tue 18-Jun-13 21:19:59

My DD was born on her due date smile

Yonihadtoask Tue 18-Jun-13 21:20:28

My DS was 3 days early.

Fakebook Tue 18-Jun-13 21:22:09

Dd was 10 days Overdue and the laziest baby ever. She never kicked. She squirmed a lot but never ever kicked inside. The sonographer was worried because she was so still at the 20 wk scan.

DS was a kicker. Used both feet to give me shocking kicks from very early on. He was born a few hours after his due date. He was very eager to come out.

deleted203 Tue 18-Jun-13 21:22:50

DD1 - arrived promptly at 8.30am on due date.
DS1 - 2 weeks early
DD2 - 3 weeks early
DS2 - 2 weeks early
DS3 - 3 days overdue and I insisted on being induced - big baby, SPD, reduced foetal movement, and (IMO) overdue for me.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear Tue 18-Jun-13 21:25:00

DC1 is a boy and was born at 34+5.

Onetwomissafew Tue 18-Jun-13 21:29:07

DC1 girl 40 weeks
DC2 boy 38 weeks
So false on late
false on boys lazy

bigkidsdidit Tue 18-Jun-13 21:29:41

My mw told me 80% of first babies are late.

notanyanymore Tue 18-Jun-13 21:30:44

mine was 4 weeks early!

notanyanymore Tue 18-Jun-13 21:31:18

mind you i had pre-eclampsia so they kind of had to get her out

ineedduckie Tue 18-Jun-13 22:22:56

DS was born 40+1 (waters broke at 40!)

SourSweets Wed 19-Jun-13 05:55:29

I asked my midwife this question and she said no. Really hoping mines not late.

HazleNutt Wed 19-Jun-13 06:57:23

I just read a book claiming that 5% of all babies are born on due date and from the rest, 30% come early, 70% late. I'm due this Friday but not getting my hopes up..

Dogsmom Wed 19-Jun-13 08:51:35

My DD was 2 days early, no early labour symptoms or braxton hicks either, I just woke up with cramps on the wednesday which never stopped so were the first contractions & she was born the following lunchtime.

MakeGlutenFreeHay Wed 19-Jun-13 08:59:08

Dd was 13 days late, ds 15 days. However, while dd was definitely fully cooked, I didn't feel that ds was (despite being 8.12). I might shift my edd 2 weeks later with this one to avoid the "haven't you had it yet?" comments.....

Longdistance Wed 19-Jun-13 09:26:47

Generally yes.

But, dd1 was 3 days early, and dd2 was 3 days late. Most people I know their first one is late.

spiderlight Wed 19-Jun-13 09:30:47

False - mine was a boy and was nearly three weeks early.

sydlexic Wed 19-Jun-13 09:31:58

I believe more often than not it is true, but by no means always. Mine was 7 weeks early.

tabulahrasa Wed 19-Jun-13 09:38:02

DS - on his due date

DD 41+3...which was massively frustrating at the time as I bought into the second babies come earlier thing as well and expected her to at least arrive by her due date, lol

BraveLilBear Wed 19-Jun-13 11:19:05

Most babies are overdue - this is true. Midwives said that around 80% of all babies are born after EDD. In France, for this reason, the term is 41 weeks, not 40 (they still induce around 42 though).

That said, there are always exceptions. (eg seemingly everyone I've spoken to recently has told me how their first was early for various reasons, mainly, alarmingly spontaneous!)

However when you think that the methods of calculating the due date are so inexact, and that they've got not clue as to what kickstarts labour, it's not surprising that babies don't tend to conform with 'the rules'.

woody2313 Wed 19-Jun-13 11:23:31

DS was 11 days late; took 3 sweeps and an induction to bring him into the world!

Fairy130389 Wed 19-Jun-13 12:49:47

First baby, boy and currently 40+2 and counting.

ToysRLuv Wed 19-Jun-13 13:41:33

DS was exactly 2 weeks early.

LittleBearPad Wed 19-Jun-13 13:45:47

DD was two weeks early but had to be induced because my waters went. I was convinced she'd be late and so the nursery wasn't exactly ready.

EGnHJsmum Wed 19-Jun-13 14:29:27

dd1 10 days early and dd2 4 days late
