Calling all mum's with stretch marks....

When did your stretch marks appear? I'm 34 weeks, and my bump is BIG!!! It has been throughout pregnancy, but I have NO stretch marks... I don't know if I'm just lucky, or whether I'm being misled, and there's still time for stretch marks to appear....

kelda Thu 04-Apr-13 18:47:46

About week 37, I think my bump changed shape at that point. I used eery oil/cream to avoid stretch marks, and didn't put on that much weight, but stretch marks are just hereditory, due to skin type.

Coconutty Thu 04-Apr-13 18:48:59

38 weeks with DS1 and about 5 weeks with DS2 unfortunately.

Started as a teeny, tiny little silver line .............

whirligiggle Thu 04-Apr-13 18:54:18

Mind appeared at 37 weeks as well, bottom of bump, top of thighs. Dd is now 10 months & they are faded pretty well. No cream really helps, I think it's genetic & you will get lucky or not. But, cream is a nice way to pamper yourself in the last uncomfortable weeks. If it makes you feel good, do it!

Somewhere between 39 wks and 40+4...I thought I'd got away with it but no!

ThedementedPenguin Thu 04-Apr-13 19:02:28

Mine only appeared Amgen my ds went over due. If he came on time id have none. sad

So at some point up to 40+11.

I only have a few just under my belly button and I have bunny ears above them.

AmandaPayneAteTooMuchChocolate Thu 04-Apr-13 19:03:29

About 37/38 weeks.

Also some I didn't even realise I had as they were right under the bump. Only discovered them when DD was out. Oh the joy.

Purplecatti Thu 04-Apr-13 19:07:37

I only got a teeny one when I went overdue. Used bio oil like crazy but I probably just got lucky as my mate did too but got loads of tiger stripes.
She dididn't get that funny line down the middle though and 5 months on mine is still there

FattyMcChubster Thu 04-Apr-13 19:09:10

Day after dd was born sad

Wildwaterfalls Thu 04-Apr-13 19:13:20

Sorry, after DD was born here too! Didn't even notice them for a couple of weeks as I was too scared to look in the direction of my Caesarian scar smile

On the plus side, by 6 months they had more or less faded away.

GaryBuseysTeeth Thu 04-Apr-13 19:14:37

38weeks, only got a few on the left side of my bump (and the front of my knees!?).
Faded quickly after birth.

Pregnant again, 21wks & have them on my thighs & some on the right side of bump....old ones don't look bad atm.

WillowB Thu 04-Apr-13 19:33:20

You might not get any. DS arrived at 38 weeks and I didn't get a single one. I used bio oil. Don't know if that made a difference. Also used it on my c section scar & it's virtually invisible.

mamapants Thu 04-Apr-13 19:38:46

I got mine before I was even 3 months gone on my legs and breasts, they didn't get worse and I didn't get any on my stomach at all. Weird its not like I had gained lots of weight at 3 months.

willowstar Thu 04-Apr-13 19:43:39

I didn't get any, both children born at 40 weeks. I was huge. I used bio oil from about 3 months every night the first time, not so much second time around.

sjupes Thu 04-Apr-13 19:45:42

i got my first one at 12 weeks with dd <i was proud! nutter hmm> then none until my belly itched like a bitch and i was recommended vitamin e cream - don't ever use vitamin e cream! my poor lovely young body was destroyed within a week of using it sad

i sincerely doubt i would have gotten anywhere near as many if it wasn't for the cream sad

my poor body.

sorry not much help at all just me self pitying really blush

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie Thu 04-Apr-13 19:47:16

Right at the end! Begin intense moisturiznig now...I did for most of the bumps appearance...so around 5 months worth and I have very few...and my baby's were big too.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie Thu 04-Apr-13 19:48:04

Sjupes it wasn't the cream that gave you stretch marks! It was bad luck and genes.

AnythingNotEverything Thu 04-Apr-13 19:50:55

I think you grow exponentially in the last 3-4 weeks, and it's that rapid growth that does it. I remember my shock when (after thinking my youthful skin was coping very well!) I caught sight of the underside of my bump at about 38 weeks and there were suddenly loads!

I agree with pps - it's luck and genes!

None with DS1, thought I'd got away with it with DS2 as well, but there they were, hiding, right under the bump! They were pretty bad, but by 6m had faded loads, and now at nearly 10m can hardly be seen, and I haven't moisturised at all.

sjupes Thu 04-Apr-13 19:52:09

sssshhhhhh neo it was the cream wink i blame the cream and dd1 everytime my poor belly gets an outing grin tbf i wrecked my mums belly and i was her second <and last>

now i'm on dc3 i don't care so much - at least the last two haven't made any new ones because theres no room for them

CheeseStrawWars Thu 04-Apr-13 19:54:29

Straight after/as DD was born - but they faded pretty quickly.

TheCountessOlenska Thu 04-Apr-13 19:57:29

I only got one under my belly button with my first pregnancy - had used bio-oil everyday.

Second pregnancy, I didn't use bio-oil as religiously but also bump was bigger and lower - got a fair few round my belly button.

Agree with everyone else -they didn't appear till the last couple of weeks so I was all smug till baby was out and I saw they had been lurking under the bump grin

BurnThisDiscoDown Thu 04-Apr-13 20:29:57

Mine appeared as soon as I went overdue, by the time DS deigned to make an appearance at 40+9 I had quite a few on the bottom of my bump. But, they faded very quickly and now, 20 months on, they are barely visible.

DizzyDizzy Thu 04-Apr-13 21:15:56

damn it!!! after reading all these posts, beginning to think i might not be getting away with it! ha! i'm 20 (21st a week after due date) and was hoping it meant my skin would recover well, so maybe that's why i hadn't been getting stretch marks. maybe not.... my mum has bought me some Estée Lauder body lotion (smells amaaaaaaaaazing) as a pamper treat, so have just started using that daily. fingers crossed! i've not got a fantastic figure, and not planning on dieting / planning an intense exercise regime after birth, but it would be nice to be stretch mark free. thanks ladies!!! at least i'm a little more prepared xxx

pinkteapot Thu 04-Apr-13 21:21:50

about 37 wks with dc1. Almost overnight from above my belly button all the way down - more stretchmarked skin than normal skin. like pps have said they fade pretty quick. But its that crepey texture they leave that I hate!!

After for me too - although wonder if mine were all "under" bump so there but hard to see

chickydoo Thu 04-Apr-13 21:34:29

Never got any at all. Had 4 DC.
I am hyper mobile, and I believe that means I have more collagen/elastin in my skin, hence it's stretchy.
Hasn't stopped the wrinkles or crows feet though.

Eletheomel Thu 04-Apr-13 21:37:26

I think I was about 36 weeks with DS. I wasn't using any fancy creams then just baby oil to keep the skin supple - but if you're going to get stretch marks, you'll get them, not much you can do.

However, mines faded to silver really quickly, the only ones that are visible now is one directly under my belly button and even then it's only noticeable because my skin is so stretched with this bump (32 weeks just now, but no new stretch marks so far and I've used no oils/creams at all).

I found it was the texture of my skin after pregnancy that was worse than the stretch marks, it went all crepe paper like (i'd also lost weight, so looked like lots of loose crepey skin on my belly and it all wrinkled round my belly button - not nice!)

Randomly enough, when I put on weight and my belly fattened up a bit, I actually found it looked more attractive and the skin seemed to go back to normal.

I'm not worried about them though, just reminds me my little boy was in there, there's worse things in life (like piles!!!)

LuckyOwl28 Thu 04-Apr-13 21:55:35

I have used oil every night and had baby oil in my bath every time and just started to get them on my hips and calf (?!?) at 37 weeks! Damn it!

AmandaPayneAteTooMuchChocolate Thu 04-Apr-13 21:58:14

Topical treatments like balms and oils are very unlikely to prevent stretchmarks as the damage is far deeper in the tissue. Mostly its genetics and weight gain.

Depressingly.

honey86 Thu 04-Apr-13 22:49:45

the ones on my thighs are skin/silver coloured, the ones on my tummy are like wrinkles blush ive got a pot of cussons mum&me bump cream, dunno if itll work but it smells lush. i tried bio oil but im still skeptical bout it specially at that price. im going to try olive oil this time, i use it on my hair as a treatment or on dry ends and it does good. cheap as, too x

I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hypermobility and is to do with the collagen in your skin) so I didn't think I would get any.

My stomach is bloody covered in them, at least 2 are over an inch thick. angry

And I used Chanel spray moisturiser at least once a day.

They appeared around 20 weeks, I think.

Fakebook Thu 04-Apr-13 22:58:16

With dc1 they came up at 40 weeks! I was so gutted, as she was 2 weeks overdue. Had she been born a little earlier I would have been spared the stripes. I didn't get any with ds. He was smaller than dd and didn't stretch the skin much.

DaveMccave Fri 05-Apr-13 00:43:01

I thought i'd got away with them last time, had none in labour and lots the day after she was born. Turns out you can get them from shrinking back down quickly or something! I'm currently 20 weeks with number 2 and my 5 year old looked at my belly with horror today, and pointed out all the 'marks' I don't know if her old faint ones are darkening or I've got new ones already. Gutted!

VIX1980 Fri 05-Apr-13 06:52:55

wk 36, got loads around my stomach, had ds 9 months ago and at first tried every cream i could find to rid myself of them, then it sunk in they will fade in there own time, They were horrible at first and i didnt believe anyone who said they would go, but 9 months on they have faded tons, still noticable but give me another few months and ill feel better about them. agree about the crepeyness though, thats the thing i cant disguise!

OrangeLily Fri 05-Apr-13 06:55:45

I don't even have babies and I have stretch marks. Had them from about the age of 14 when i suddenly got lady thighs and hips. 16 or 17 where my boobs just appeared overnight. DH has them too, is mental.

After pregnancy a good idea is to get out in the sun if you end up with stretch marks, we've found it's help turn angry red ones silver.

phantomhairpuller Fri 05-Apr-13 06:59:53

Mine appeared as soon as my bump started to show. I used every lotion and potion available too hmm
My DMs otherwise flat stomach is ruined by stretch marks so I'm guessing for me they were hereditary.
Currently 37+ with DS2 an they don't appear to have gotten any worse yet wink

Lutrine Fri 05-Apr-13 09:44:33

I'm almost 36 weeks and have escaped getting any on my bump so far, but there's loads on my bum! I didn't even think it'd grown that much sad

Fenton Fri 05-Apr-13 09:49:36

I didn't get a single one with my first child and he was 8lb + and I'm 5ft nothing.

Second child was a pound heavier than the first and my skin gave in at about 39 weeks when (it appeared to me) he started jostling for room and stretching out horizontally. I remember it felt really itchy and sensitive under clothes at about the time the stretch marks appeared.

madamecake Fri 05-Apr-13 10:39:46

Last pregnancy I got loads on my inner thighs from about 12 weeks, nearly down to my knees! I didn't have any on my stomach until a day or 2 after dd was born, and although really red and deep they faded quite quickly.
Am now 33 weeks with this pregnancy, and no new ones yet, but no doubt they'll appear after the birth again.

I had the same hopes OP. 21, so hoped my youthful skin would do well. It didn't. They appeared overnight at 38 weeks, snuck up from under my bump and spread rapidly! My bump was covered completely by 39 weeks sad. I even got stretch marks on my fanjo sadsadsad. I got them over my boobs after giving birth, those ones are fading now, but my stomach and fanjo ones are still very visible now DS is 9 months...

I'm 41 + 2 with my first pregnancy. Was feeling very smug about stretch marks until about 3 weeks ago when I noticed some stretch marks on the left hand side of my stomach and at the top of my thighs. I have been religiously applying vitamin E cream since about 12 weeks pregnant. sad

But I'm hoping the cream will at least stop the skin going crepey once he's out!

Tinkerbell43 Fri 05-Apr-13 13:10:33

No stretch marks on my tummy but all over bum & thighs from about 29 weeks :-( hopefully they won't stick around too long after birth now 41+2 x

polkadotsrock Fri 05-Apr-13 14:19:26

I second the getting in the sun- I went to the states with ds when he was 5 months and the sunbathing was like a miracle cure, although mine weren't actually all that bad, just a few small ones that had been hidden under bump and one where my belly button had been pierced in the good ol' days! I already had some on my hips anyway but I swear they've always been there and are tiny and silver.

ohmentalnessisme Fri 05-Apr-13 14:55:58

I got more over my breasts than on my belly. In the early days of breastfeeding I looked like Dolly Parton!

plummyjam Fri 05-Apr-13 15:17:07

Got 2 tiny ones each side of my bellybutton after going 41 weeks with DD who weighed 9lb 2oz. Expected to get loads as had a lot on my thighs as a teenager following a growth spurt so was generally quite pleased as my bump was huge. Did get quite a few under my boobs when my milk came in though.

Didn't use any creams etc, I think whether you get them is due to genetics, how quickly the skin is stretched and age - seems older women are less affected. I was 30 when DD was born.

After DD was born!! But they faded quickly. This time around they appeared around 35 weeks.

rustybusty Sat 06-Apr-13 08:06:04

Ive had 2 babies so far, and havent got 1 stretchmark. I still wear cropped t shirts when out. You may not get any or crepey skin, and your stomach may not change at all.

It helped with me by being very petite to start with.

MrsSpagBol Sat 06-Apr-13 14:18:21

Well that has wiped the smugness off my face!

I am 25 weeks and nothing in sight, thought I had gotten away with it but clearly not!!!

DizzyDizzy Sat 06-Apr-13 16:50:49

that's exactly what i though MrsSpagBol. totally gutted now i've found out that might not appear until AFTER the birth! Crap!!!!! xxx

AmandaPayneAteTooMuchChocolate Sat 06-Apr-13 17:02:34

25 weeks? I hate to say it MrsSpagBol, but very few people I know who got stretch marks, even pretty bad ones, had any at 25 weeks. They come at teh end because that's the point that the skin is at its most stretched and can't take any more IYSWIM.

Mrsd1984 Sat 06-Apr-13 21:13:30

sad I was feeling so proud of myself for not having a single one and being 25 weeks. All the pregnancy emails I have received stated that I should be seeing them by now so felt so chuffed I hadn't. Just a waiting game then..............

AmandaPayneAteTooMuchChocolate Sat 06-Apr-13 21:16:24

You might be lucky. Do you have any others? I am prone, I have them on my thighs and back from growth spurts in puberty. I still only got a few in pregnancy though.

MrsSpagBol Sat 06-Apr-13 23:51:26

LOL @ Mrsd I am SURE I got that Babycentre email saying they would show at 22 weeks!! I even gave myself 3 weeks buffer just in case.
Guess the joke is on me!!!

Amanda I do see what you mean. I'll let you know in 20 weeks!

AmandaPayneAteTooMuchChocolate Sun 07-Apr-13 09:32:15

Good luck. You might be one of the lucky ones!
