Hi

I am 6 weeks and 5 days and for the last few hours I have been suffering from sharp stabbing pains in my lower right hand side abdomen and hip.

Has anyone else had this?

What could it be?

I'm so scared that I could be losing our baby!! X

I'd go and get checked out by a doctor or go to an EPU. It could be an ectopic pregnancy, might be just stretching pains or nothing at all but best to get seen. Have you had any bleeding?

RJM17 Mon 25-Mar-13 17:43:14

No not had any bleeding just the pains. It isn't constant but comes and goes like a stabbing pain x

RJM17 Mon 25-Mar-13 18:00:29

Also don't think it can be ectopic because I had a scan last Wednesday and the sac etc was in my uterus so wouldn't that mean it has already passed the tubes?? X

SeriousStuff Mon 25-Mar-13 18:22:16

RJM17 if it was ectopic, they would've spotted it on the scan. I had an early scan for precisely this reason - luckily all was where it should be.

Sometimes sharp pains can be from stretching ligaments or it could even be wind! (sound silly but wind when pg is like nothing else!)

Also, the fact that there's no bleeding is a very good sign.

But, for peace of mind, I'd get it checked out - the one thing I've been told over and over by people is never be afraid to get things checked out - your health and the baby's is the most important thing for the next 9 months.

I had exactly the same through weeks 7 and 8. DH made me go te walk in centre in the end and they in turn sent me to the early pregnancy unit. Consultant examined me just to check all seemed normal then booked me in for a scan later in the week. He did say that this was pretty normal and was just due to stretching/moving. To be honest it didn't really feel like stretching to me but he said as long as I wasn't bleeding he wasn't too worried. I think in all honesty he gave me the scan for my own piece of mind... They are clearly used to people going in with worries so if you are concerned there is no harm in reassuring yourself

Thank u for the advice. I am already under the early pregnancy unit so will see how it is tomorrow and if no better I'll give them a call and see what they say. But there is definately no bleeding so hopefully it is like u say stretching or wind!
Thanks again I feel a bit better knowing others have had this xx

ButteryJam Mon 25-Mar-13 21:17:49

I had extremely sharp pains in early pregnancy and they were due to wind and digestive problems. Hope you feel better soon.

I've had the same thing and was particularly worried as I've had 4 previous cesareans but I was told it's just caused by ligaments stretching.

RJM17 Mon 25-Mar-13 21:33:58

Thank u. I went in google and terrified myself with what it could be. But glad I am on here as can get real advice from real people which makes me feel a lot better x

Hi RJM, I'm 7+4 & have had something similar. I get really intense pain in my abdomen, not so much stabbing, I couldn't localise it, like the worst period pains x100. Also sometimes accompanied by pain in my leg. It comes and goes about 2-3 times a day & has lasted from 15mins to 2 hrs. Anyway it turned out to be a CL Cyst on my ovary. Not harmful to the baby & quite common apparently. You could find its something like that, fingers crossed its not though as although not harmful it's a PITA!! Good luck sorting it.

RJM17 Tue 26-Mar-13 10:05:05

Thanks. I am currently sat waiting to see my doctor hoping she can tell me what it is as the pains just got worse thru the night!! Fingers crossed its nothing serious x

Saundy Tue 26-Mar-13 10:43:50

Good luck, make sure you report back.

RJM17 Tue 26-Mar-13 11:30:04

I have seen my doc and she thinks I may have a cyst so I am just waiting for a call from the hospital to go in for a scan and that should tell me what it is. I have everything crossed as I am terrified that something is wrong with the baby x

Saundy Tue 26-Mar-13 11:58:31

I got my scan the next day, a cyst isn't a brilliant result but could be much worse - we can complain together!

The cyst is apparently giving the baby a super dose of a hormone that sustains it pre fully formed placenta so that's only a good thing. Someone on here also told me that it can reduce your chance of mc, I've no idea what that fact was based on but I'll take it!

No bleeding is good & you already know everything is where it should be so try not to worry. You'll also get to see your little nugget again now - bonus!

SeriousStuff Tue 26-Mar-13 12:16:33

At 5+2 weeks I had a mwhassive cyst! I was so worried about it. But by 10+3 it was completely gone. Was told that it's extremely common and it is to do with the surge in hormones which happens to help give your baby the best possible start.

A lot of women will have them without even realising and they disappear by the time they have their first scans at 12 weeks.

RJM17 Tue 26-Mar-13 14:17:10

Thanx ladies I'm at the hospital waiting to be seen!!
I have unfortunately had some bleeding so they want to check me over. Keeping everything crossed tho and will let u know how it goes x

SeriousStuff Tue 26-Mar-13 14:26:19

Hi
Well after sitting in a&e for over 4 hours they have me a phone number and said ring clinic tomora as they can't do a scan today cos clinic closed at 12!!!
I am so annoyed!! Why leave me sat there for so long if they not gonna do anything!! Still got same pains although bleeding stopped. So just have to wait until tomora now if I can get an appointment when I ring! X

Saundy Tue 26-Mar-13 20:05:26

That's so frustrating! I'm sorry you still don't have any answers, hopefully you'll get that appt tmr.

Good luck tomorrow. How frustrating. I had lots of horrible stabby pain and bleeding but all was well xx

SeriousStuff Tue 26-Mar-13 20:10:39

How annoying! I wish everyone would understand how stressful being pg is and how easily it is to worry. They wouldn't make you hang around and send you home so easily then...

Let us know what happens tomorrow

RJM17 Tue 26-Mar-13 20:29:56

Will do. Thank u for all ur support. X

RJM17 Wed 27-Mar-13 10:00:35

Managed to get an appointment for this morning for a scan so hopefully it will be ok!!! Sooooo scared though x

Saundy Wed 27-Mar-13 10:08:36

Not long now then, it's so stressy but a bit of blood as I'm sure you know can be quite common & nothing sinister. Let us know how you fare, in the mean time another bucket of luck your way. xx

RJM17 Wed 27-Mar-13 10:14:17

Thanks saundy!! Really appreciate ur support through this. X

Saundy Wed 27-Mar-13 12:03:05

Just checking back & yey!! Great news! No explanation about the pain though? Did they rule out a cyst? But who cares as long as everything is as it should be!

Aah and breathe! Enjoy your relaxing day and the knowledge that all is well x

Really pleased for you. I hope you have an event free pregnancy from here on.

RJM17 Wed 27-Mar-13 12:13:53

Yeah they checked for cysts but there was none there saundy.
They said I may have one that burst and that's why I had the pain but as long as everything is ok with the baby that's all that matters to me to be honest.
Thank u again for ur support it really means a lot xxx

Saundy Wed 27-Mar-13 13:20:49

Franimal Thu 28-Mar-13 16:03:25

Reading this thread with interest...Good luck, I hope you'll be ok.
I've been having abdominal pains too on my lower right hand side abdomen and hip, been to gp about it, but no further action yet... I have a feeling I may be pregnant (will test next week) as I think I had implantation bleeding/pains two weeks ago. We weren't trying as I've been having recurrent miscarriages so waiting to see a specialist end of May for that and we decided to have a break until then,.. but who knows... I am also terrified of finding that there are any other problems so I guess the anxiety as well the pains and the "not knowing" are just playing on my mind all the time...

RJM17 Thu 28-Mar-13 19:32:48

Hey franimal,
I hope u get the result u are after.
We weren't trying when we found out I was pregnant. We had agreed to wait a year because I was having treatment for cysts on my ovaries so we thought we would wait and have one last 'coupley holiday' and then start trying again!! But two weeks after having that talk I found out I was 4 weeks pregnant lol.
I have found with most of my friends as well it has been when we not trying that we fall pregnant!!
Keep us informed of what the doc says! And good luck with ur treatment and hopefully u will get the positive test u want xxx
