How many weeks is pregnancy?

Hi,

This is probably a really stupid question but how long do they say the average pregnancy should be?

I am about halfway into pregnancy and thought it was 40 weeks in total but when I have look at my due date that makes me 42 weeks so am really confused now. I know my 1st scan date put me at 12 weeks, but when I work it out from that date to the due date they have given me it still works out as 42 weeks.

Am I going mad in my pregnancy having calculated it wrong, or is 42 weeks correct?!!!

40 weeks from the date of your last period.

40 weeks from your last period (assuming 28 day cycle).
38 weeks from conception.

What dates have you been given?

Ok my last period was about 19/20 Jan.
I had my 1st scan on 16 April and was told I was 12 weeks and 1 day. They gave me due date of 28 Oct.

So is that 40 or 42 weeks in total - have been trying to work it out on calander and unless my counting of weeks is up the shoot am sure that works out at 42 weeks.

This is going to drive me mad isn't it, unless any of you can fig it out right and either tell me I'm crackers in my maths data or I'm correct and need to query the due date!

I think your hormones may be affecting your counting!

If your last period started on 20 Jan, 28 Oct is 40 weeks and 1 day, so that would fit with ovulating on around day 14 or 15 of your cycle.

Congratulations, btw. My DD2 was born on 25 Oct last year so counting up the weeks has brought lovely memories back for me.

Will blame it all on the hormones!

Thank you for your help ladies - at least I won't drive myself crackers any further - maybe it's lack of sleep that set me off convinced that there were more weeks than there should have been?!!!
