bending with a bump

I'm 16 weeks and am starting to show a little bit, I have a little rounder tummy than usual, although not a big bump.

I was out with a friend in a cafe today. Her child's toy was under the table on the floor by my feet.

Without thinking, I bent to get the toy, and in trying to avoid banging my head on the table, I ended up bending hairpin-like, so I really felt it as I squished against my tummy.

I think it was already a bit uncomfortable because my jeans button and waistband were squeezing below my tummy a bit, and suddenly I panicked slightly - what was I doing?! But I managed to come back up again, I didn't get stuck thankfully.

But I"m now a bit frightened I could have done baby some damage, squashed it somehow. It is safer than that in there, isn't it?

At 16 weeks the baby will be fine in there - as you get more pregnant, bend with your knees for the most part (and dont do anything that feels uncomfortable) and both you and baby will be fine.

You have done no damage to your baby.

You will learn to bend your knees and Keep you back straight in future.

Calm down, dear.

I don't think you will have done, they're pretty resilient! I'm 32 wks and increasingly huge, bending is getting to be a big problem! But I still find myself doing it at times and still feel plenty of (now quite uncomfortable) wriggles after! There is plenty of fluid and padding in there, don't worry!

I miss bending over.

Now at 29 weeks doing my shoes up seems like a total effort, and the mixture of vague clumsyness meaning I keep dropping things, and the inability to bend properly is a right nuisance.

No, you won't have damaged baby - you can't compress a fluid (which is why it is so uncomfortable to bend, so hope that is reassuring! I can't wait to be able to bend over again...

When I was pregnant with son, I bent into a cupboard and absent mindedly squidged my bump out of the way. I could feel it squidge like a big peoce of rubber and was really worried. Felt so stupid.

Baby was perfectly fine

I always end up like a turtle on my back trying to get off the sofa - it's difficult getting used to losing flexibility around your abdominal area, particularly if you were pretty fit and flexible before you got pregnant. Since I didn't really show until about 23 weeks or so, I had problems remembering not to bend over like that or I'd trying and get up from lying down without rolling on to my side first or using my elbows for support. Like you it felt kind of uncomfortable and I kept worrying I was hurting the baby. But really, you only hurt yourself as your already straining tendons and ligaments scream in disapproval!! DOn't worry, you'll get used to it soon and then you won't be able to see your toes or anything lying at your feet pretty soon anyway ;)
