I have only known for a week that I'm pg, got BFP on Tue 11th May, went to see the nurse and she thinks I'm at least 15 weeks, and looking at things, I could be as much as 25 weeks. I have an emergency scan on Friday, but in the meantime, I have a few concerns. Either way, 15 or 25, I have had 2 x-rays whilst being pg, due to having had pneumonia in Feb. When I asked the GP about it, he said, "oh, it's nothing to worry about", but I'm not so sure. What can having x-rays while being pg do to the foetus? There must be some risks or they wouldn't tell you not to have them while you are pg.

Also I've been on antibiotics (cefalexin) in December (which would only be an issue if I'm 25 weeks) And also I was on cefalexin again in february which is an issue either way, and because of the pneumonia, I also had intravenous antibiotics in February, I can't remember the name of it but it started with 'T'. As well as that when I was in hospital with pneumonia I was having injections of blood thinner to prevent blood clots while I was immobile. When I asked the GP about all this, he just brushed me off and told me not to worry, but what I want to know is what effects all this could actually have.

If anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it. I'm just really concerned because there's so much I would have done differently had I known I was pg!

Were the x-rays only to your chest ? And just normal x-rays, not a CT ?

In that case, the dose of radiation to the foetus (at that stage, low in your pelvis) would be v tiny - less that it would have got if you went on a plane to the US (being high in the sky exposes you to more cosmic radiation) certainly. I used to do foetal dose calculatins for women who had CT's in pregnancy and other radiation exposures, so I am v confident in my answer here btw.

The heparin is given to women who are known to be pregnant, so isn't a problem.

I don't know about the antibiotics, but you'll be able to ask the mw to check what you had and any possible side effects

Most antibiotics are OK to use in pregnancy - the risk of the pneumonia was probably greater than that of the antibiotics.
Most decisions are based on is the risk of not treating the infection greater than the risk of the antibiotics and as you were hospitalised I am guessing that the answer to that was yes!
Cefalexin is generally OK in pregnancy. Was the IV one Tazocin? Can't think of any others beginning with T apart from tetracycline which I don't think I have ever seen used IV.

They were normal chest x-rays, not CT scans. So hopefully that should be OK. And I didn't realise that cefalexin was OK in pregnancy. I only had one dose of the IV antibiotics as they realised that because of my epilepsy meds, I shouldn't be on ?quino? antibiotics. So they put me back on the cefalexin. Thank you so much, I feel happier knowing that everything is probably fine, and I have my scan tomorrow. TBH, the risk from the pneumonia was probably greater, I was in hospital for over a week and was really quite ill with it.

Hope your scan went well today and that they were able to reassure you that everything is fine.
