currently in hospiital as my waters broke at just under 15 weeks last night. it is a twin pregnancy and so far one twin seems ok, but the other twin has no anmiotic fluid and little movement but does have a heartbeat.

if anyone has any experience of this, good or bad, please post. i don't think the pprgnosis is good sadly.

thanks..

I have no experience of this.. but just wanted to say I'm so sorry you're going through this. I'm sure someone with some knowledge will be along soon.

oh I really feel for you, you must be beside yourself. I have no direct experience but a person I know had a similar problem allbeit a bit later. Her water broke at 24 week and was in hospital constantly being monitored. Her DS managed to stay in for about 3/4 weeks and was born at 27 or 28 weeks (can't remember exactly). He stayed in SCUB for a few months but is now a very content and healhy 1 year old.

Another person I know had triplets born at 28 weeks. They had to have a few operations but are also well and healthy.

Don't know if that helps though as this was all much later in their pregnancies.

Fingers crossed for you and your lo.

my waters broke at 18 weeks - you're right about the prognosis not being good, for a number of reasons. most importantly that the lungs are completely undeveloped and with no fluid have no chance of doing so. furthermore with no fluid there is no ability to move around so limb function is compromised. finally of course, waters breaking can well mean that the onset of labour is imminent.
i am am giving you the worst case scenario - the sac can reseal and waters build back up again. in my case the doctors tried a procedure called amnio infusion - basically putting water back into the sac (like a reverse amniocentesis) - but i had a big tear and it all just came straight back out again (this was 6 years ago so i'm not sure whether this procedure is standard now). we did not have a good outcome - we lost ds2 at around 21 weeks.
i hope that you have a better outcome - i'm sorry that my post is doom and gloom but you asked for good and bad.

i dont think the twin with no waters has much of a chance im afraid as although they can prolong a pregnancy once waters have gone i think it is too early...although from what i read last week (will try and find the thread) they can save the baby WITH the sac..
im ever so sorry and definately ask someone about ur worries and ill look as hard as i can for the thread xx take care and good luck...keep us informed

Thankyou. If you could find the other twin thread, that would help a lot, thankyou.

I am struggling to cope but will maybe feel better once i have had a scan today. My husband is also very upset, not least as it's his birthday today and we may find out we have lost one or both of our babies.

Hopefully I will know more later.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear this. What has the consultant said? Have a look on the kanalen website which has helpful info on prom and bothe + negative stories. FWIW I have met 2 women who have ppromed & lost one twin but the other has survived, both slightly prem though.

Sadly, I would agree that outlook not great for PROM twin - key lung devpmt occurs with amniotic fluid between 18-22 weeks. You will hear many more stories of survival where PROM has occurred at 22+ weeks than before. Though there are stories on kanalen of survival at earlier stages.

My story - I prommed at 17 weeks and baby died at 18 of infection, was not treated with antibiotics though, they should have you on ABs.

I hope you have plenty of RL help and support. Remember your other twin, if there are no other probs, has a good fighting chance.

Thankyou. I had another scan yesterday and ther are still two heartbeats. One small pocket of fluid in the ruptured membrane around twin 1. I am not currently leaking fluid and haven't been since early Saturday morning. I am hoping that's a good sign, but we won't know for a week or so if the fluid is building back up.

The kanalen prom website was encouraging, so thankyou for that. I am going to ask my cosultant to look at it as this doesn't appear to be all that common and I am not sure if they know of any positive outcomes from my situation. I am also going to ask about stopping labour if it happens as from what I can gather, as long as both twins are alive and I don't have an infection there's a chance. I don't want to be unrealistic but i'm also not prepared to give up.

Thanks again.

so are you having another scan in a week?

So pleased you've heard both heartbeats. Really hope they've got you on ABs.I know you don't want to be pessimistic but I would recommend recording heartbeat on your phone and asking for extra scan pics etc. just in case.

Be aware when viewing US sites - the attitude to PROM over there is totally different, they do amnio infusions, patches, drugs to stop labour...over here only a few hosps do amnio transfusions and thats on clinical trial; over here the medical attitude is very much miscarriage is inevitable once waters have gone.

Do you think its worth getting in touch with Bliss, the prem babies charty? Plenty of ladies on their boards with experience of PROM. Also TAMBA - I expect there are lots of people there who have experience of one twin with a problem and the other not.

Hope you are getting plenty of rest and fluids, will be thinking of you.

Thanks once again. I am now at home and in bed.

I had another scan today. Twin 2 is still absolutely fine and twin 1 still has a heartbeat and is also able to move a little, which is a good sign. I thought it looked like there was a little more fluid, in pockets around twin 1, but tbh, the doctor scanning me wasn't my own consultant and clearly didn't give a toss... I don't think it helps that I have been scanned by someone different each time either.

I think I am lucky in a way to be in Northern Ireland as they take do not take even medically necessary terminations lightly here and the doctor did say 'in some other countries they may decide to terminate immediately, but we don't do that here'. I am on antibiotics 4 times a day and also using antibacterial wipes after the toilet etc and trying to eat as healthily as possible and drink as much watr as I can. I don't usually get ill, or urine infectins or thrush etc, so not sure if that is in my favour, as I know people can be prone to these things. From what I can gather, as long as I don't get an infection, there is a good chance, at least for twin 2 and maybe twin 1.

I have to visit my local hospital three time a week for bloods to be taken to check for infection levels and general monitoring. I will also see my consultant there once a week. Then, if I can get to 20 weeks, I'll be admitted again.

I know that statistically things aren't in my favour, but I am determined to do all I can. My consultant did say he has't had a case of pPROM this early, but has had two ladies, one at 17 weeks and one at 19 weeks who both went on to deliver healthy babies, so I think they will give me every possible chance. I just have to hpe and pray I don't get an infection.

Thanks again owlingate, so sorry to hear about your baby. Thankyou so much for all the lks you have given me.

Keep thinking positive, that is the best thing for you and your babies. I know people are saying to be realistic etc etc, but I really believe that imagining a positive outcome will give your babies the best possible chance! I know that staying positive will be really hard to do in this horrible situation, but it does sound like you are doing a great job of it and are dealing with things very well.
You'll be in my thoughts

Great news I have been thinking of you. Glad you've got a consultant who is on your side iykwim. Have you asked about the possibility of doing amnio infusion? I know at one point they were trialling it at a couple of UK centres, Liverpool Womens Hospital was one of them. Keep us updated if you can.

Thankyou all so much. The support helps a lot, it really does.

I saw a registrar today as consultant is away. Got the usual negaivity and then she started saying 'if you can get to 24 weeks, but of course, no-one wants their baby born at 24 weeks...' Well, of course not, but to me right now, 24 weeks is looking pretty good compared to my current situation!

Both twins have heartbeats and both are moving, although twin 1 is very constricted and curled up with not much room. Twin 2 is a feisty little thing though, very wriggly. For some reason, the registrar wrote 'FM ++ and FH' for twin 2, but only wrote 'FM' for twin 1. Not sure why?! Both definitely had heartbeats.

Twin 1 is measuring slightly smaller, but has always done when they ahve measured. At my 12 week scan they were measuring 1+3 and 11+1, so five days difference, then at 14+5 they were measuring 12+6 and 14+2 and today (16+2) they were measuring 15+2 and 16+ 0, so the difference today correlates with my booking scan and they are definitely both growing, which is the important thing.

Also, she said it was too early to tell the sexes, ( I know they can tell the sex from this gestation, but they are reluctant to tell at all over here in Northern Ireland) but hubby and I agreed to our untrained eyes twin 2 looks like a boy. Of course, we might be wrong, we'll just have to see!

Hi Midori.
Only just seen your posts.
I only know of one twin PROM at 17 weeks. Sadly, the little lad did not survive long after birth, although I think she carried to very nearly term.
His twin was fine.
Your team sound fab though! Good luck, and thinking of you.
