am genuinly quite wirried about this, have my first appointment this week and i am dreading what they will sy about my weight.

i have a bmi of 35, pregnanncy was unplanned (although very much wanted) so even though i was not happy with how much i weighed before i now feel really guilty that i might be putting the baby at risk.

i actually look my best when my bmi is around 27 and am tall so am actually a size 16 which is not bad for my height but i am still classed as obese and am dreading getting on the scales and being made to feel even worse

any HCP who is actually professional should not make you feel bad about your weight.

It will be part of their duty to inform you whether it will make you pregnancy any more difficult or risky, but it should be advice, not judgement.

They can also advise you how to avoid putting on extra unnecessary weight during the pg.

You are a size 16? I wouldnt worry about it. I think they don't even weigh pregnant women any more.
I was a size 20 when i got pregnant with dd1 and they bollocked me for going to amsterdam (I didn't know I was pregnant!) but didn't say anything about my weight.

You shouldn't get a bollocking - more likely to get some gentle advice as meemar says. You may be referred to a consultant, maybe not. Don't worry though, everyone is there to help you, not make you feel bad.

Congratulations on your pregnancy

I am huge and the misdwife did not tell me off at all. I was worried, like you. I think midwives are used to seeing proper, grown up women, some of whom are massively pregnant so they don't really bat an eyelid.

I had GD when pregnant and had to go on a low GI diet. I lost weight as a result but the baby and I stayed healthy. Not saying you will have GD but if you wanted to lose weight sensibly while pregnant you could ask the midwife about that.

I was getting on for a size 18 before pregnancy with dc1 and was concerned at booking appointment. MW took one look at me and said I had nothing to worry about as I was no where near at risk category and she wasn't worried about weighing me.

Don't know what my BMI was.

I gained 3 stone when pregnant but stayed very fit and healthy and had a relatively quick and easy labour. Within 9 months I was over a stone lighter than pre pregnancy.

my BMI is higher than yours. My MW didn't say anything to me, she was very lovely.

Don't worry honey, they're not there to patronize you or make you feel bad about your health - they will take it on board and may tailor your care accordingly, but that is what they're paid for.

Congratulations on your pregnancy

You won't get a bollocking, in fact I expect you will be treated with politeness and respect.

You can decline to be weighed, if you so wish. If you are weighed, depending upon the protocols of your PCT you may be pushed towards consultant-led care through pregnancy but this won't necessarily affect how or where your delivery is planned. You may be offered GTTs etc but again you can decline if you prefer.

In your shoes I would read up about the risks related to high BMI and pregnancy so that you can make informed decisions for yourself with the guidance of HCPs.

And CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations!

I was expecting to be berated on a monthly basis but as it was I wasn't even weighed. She asked my weight, I told her - then she said that I shouldn't put on 5 stone - pretty much common sense then!

Had my blood pressure taken last monday and it's very low - in your face Daily Mail!
