Pregnancy

help - only 9 weeks and have excrutiating hip pain

I am almost 10 weeks pregnant. I have had hip pain for the last two weeks but put it down to softening joints and nothing too serious.
But last night I couldn't sleep with the pain and today I can barely walk and am in agony.
Fortunately I don't have to work this week. I have made a drs appointment for two days time and will request physio from advice from other threads here.
I am nervous about being fobbed off with a painkiller as I have found so far that midwife not been helpful, not called back.
I had a miscarriage in March but have so far been ignored by my drs surgery ie when I tried to get an early scan etc. Had to pay for one myself at 8 weeks.
I just want the pain to go. Any advice??
Is it too early for SPD?
I also feel sick 24/7 so not having a nice time right now.

I used to get bad hip pain at night and sometimes when ive exercised too strenuously. I've experimented with sleeping with a U-shaped pillow between my legs at night (for me it makes it worse if i have it between my knees - but if i angle it so that it's between my thighs and calves/ankles it is a lot better) and cut down on exercise (ie take it slower) and it has improved no end. Not sure if this is SPD - I thought SPD was pelvic pain but I could be wrong??

I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for the message. I have moved my drs appointment to today so I will see what he says also!

ditto pillow between the knees - this actually solved the who problem for me, and it was agonising before I started doing this. Other than that you can get some strapping and see a physio.

good luck

Thanks for messages. The dr was great and he thinks it's too early to be pregnancy related so he is sending me of for blood tests to check for viral arthiritis or an infection which is a bit scary..

I've had horribly painful hips most of the way through too, and also did with my last pregnancy (last time round I had to try and sleep sitting in a chair by the end cos it was too painful to lie down). My MW said it isn't SPD and is just "one of those things" that can happen when you're pregnant. I take paracetamol if it gets really bad. I guess you could always see your GP and see if you can get some stronger painkillers?

Is it both hips, or just one?

I had hip pain from about that stage in my second preg (first one didn't get that far). Midwife referred me direct to physio. She contorted me about on the couch and concluded that it was a combo of suddenly stopping running (I'd been doing 20-30 miles per week til I tested positive and stopped regular training as soon as got the positive), pregnancy hormones and maybe an old running niggle. She gave me pool exercises to do and it was a miracle. 2 weeks later I was tender but fine. So well worth asking to see fizz if no joy from the blood tests. You can't beat a proper assessment and treatment plan.

It is just my left hip at the moment.
I have been for my blood tests today but I feel that it must be pregnancy related as never had anything like this before.
My feeling is that I need physio and things just need putting back into place.
So hopefully the blood tests will come back negative and I can start some physio as soon as possible.
I was doing a lot of yoga before my pregnancy was confirmed and now have stopped everything apart from walking so that may be something to do with it.
Thanks for all the advice. I have been sleeping on a duvet and with cushion between my knees which helped and I had paracetomal yesterday and that worked a treat!

Do keep an eye on your leg for any swelling Kapars, or a "bursting" type of pain. It's unlikely, but just possible that it could be a DVT as they most often present in the hip/groin area in pregnancy. I had one 6 years ago, which first manifested itself through pain in my hip, which got so bad over 5 days that I could barely walk.

SPD is a bit of an old fashioned term as it is just pain over the pubic symphysis. The correct term now is pelvic girdle pain which emcompasses pain obviously around the pelvic area front and back and includes hip pain. Read this for extra info. www.acpwh.org.uk/docs/ACPWH-PGP_HP.pdf

try to stay as active as pain allows to maintain as much stability from the muscles as possible while your hormones are playing havoc with your ligaments.

Good luck

I will keep an eye on swelling, the DVT sounds terrible Bramshott, and thanks for the leaflet debstebs - really helpful.
I've had another trauma today as had to dash to A and E as had a bleed in the night. (had a miscarriage in march so was terrified)
But had a scan and all is fine at ten weeks so very relieved. Hurray!
Still waiting to here back about my blood tests for my hip but will push for physio.

How terrifying. I'm glad everything is okay. I'm glad the paracetamol and the cushion has helped a bit with your hip. Interesting info about SPD too

Thanks. I have to see the dr on Wed to discuss my results but I was told it's nothing serious so I presume we will be discussing physio etc...
Pain has almost gone now but don"t want it to come back!
