Indigestion in early pregnancy - help please?!

Does anyone have any good tips for coping with indigestion? I'm only 7+2, and feel sick when hungry (and most of the rest of the time), but as soon as I eat it feels like the food is stuck in my gullet for a couple of hours. It's horrible, it really is, and it's putting me off food even more than I already was! Does anything help? Why is it happening? I hd chronic heartburn with DS but this feels different.

You're not alone - I am getting this feeling all the time! Have had it since I had only just found out I was pg, and am now 10 weeks. It's pretty horrible, but I'm finding the constant sickness the worst!! The only thing I've found to help is making sure I am sat absolutley upright when eating, and staying that way for 30 mins or so after (ie. not flopping out on the sofa after dinner!). Even then, I can still feel it in my gullet a bit. I hope someone has a tip to stop it completely!

GAVISCON

I insist - I drink litres of the stuff.

Can't stand it but I'm willing to give anything a go! Thanks for the tips.

Me too!! Scoffing all day and fine, then after evening meal I get indigestion. Usually go to bed sucking a fruit flavoured Rennie which does help. Got woke up Sunday morning with awful bout of it and got instant relief from a Gaviscon liquid sachet - tastes vile but works a treat.

Same here - it's minging isnt it? Eat little and often, don't lie down immediatley after eating and take Gaviscon, I don't think there's any real solution.

I've ended up on a drug called omeprazole as went from constant heartburn/indigestion to vomiting to agonising pain. Has helped a lot and I'm now keeping away from the hospital and keeping fluids down - I'm just 10 wks and really didn't want to need drugs but it's the lesser of two evils really

I find rennie MUCH more palatable than gaviscon personally.

Also, (and I don't want to sound like walking advertisement for Danone) but eating those Activia yoghurts (or the Asda knock off versions which are yummy) has really really helped with the whole "food stuck in your throat" feeling. Dunno why, but it works a treat

I agree with the Gaviscon suggestion, it works wonders. Mollybob, I have been taking omeprazole for years for acid reflux. I worried during my first pregnacy about continuing to take it and have a beautiful healthy daughter if that puts your mind at rest.

Be careful with Gaviscon - its full of salt. OK unless you have blood pressure issues.

Had this problem in first pregnancy - suggest not drinking at the same time as eating, avoid fizzy drinks and watch out for particular foods that trigger it (for me it was bread.

Thanks for the yoghurt tip, am going to give that a go. Mollybob, was it the heartburn and indigestion that caused the vomiting? That's kind of how I feel, like the indigestion makes me want to be sick...

not sure - but the more i vomited the worse the heratburn and pain got and the worse the vomiting got - a real vicious circle. at least now i'm keeping down fluids although still feel pretty sick with occas vomit/wretching bout

I get this, soo uncomfortable - but only really in the evenings at the moment - small meals seem to help, I have to avoid dairy as slight lactose intolerance has got a lot worse and have found a cup of hot water or peppermint tea straight after food helps too. the peppermint helps digestion, not sure why the water helps!

is it normal to get indigestion as early as 5 weeks?? feels so uncomfortable all the time!!

I had a massive bout of heartburn that early after a heavy lunch. Gaviscon tablets are not unpleasant (need a bit of chewing) and safe to take (it even says so on the packet).

have had terrible indigestion in all three of my pregnancies and the only thing that works for me is gaviscon advanced liquid which the GP prescribes.

Also at night sleeping on a massive pile of pillows as otherwise heartburn gets so bad that it wakes me up :-(

The live yoghurt thing definitely works for me. The other thing that I have found helpful is not letting myself get hungry (I eat a small, bland snack every couple of hours). If I leave it too long between meals I get very acid.

I am so pleased that I just found this topic - I have had terrible indigestion, in fact I have it right at this very moment. I have found mint tea and liquid gaviscon haven't really helped but I am definitely going to try the live yoghurt option.

I will let you know how I get on! Hopefully it won't last much longer but the last few weeks have been quite uncomfortable.

Weirdly, I don't get it after breakfast, only lunch and dinner so maybe I should eat cereal and toast all day long...

Me too, all the time! This did not happen last time - then was sickness, this time serious indigestion and only a bit of sickness. I'm only 5-6 weeks too, but knew I was pregnant from my stomach! Ginger can be really helpful though for this and for sickness especially - I lived off the cristalised stuff before, am expecting to do so again.
