top sheet just means a sheet that's not a fitted sheet or a blanket. so just a sheet basically. your flannel ones will be fine.

ok. you need a sheet over the mattress, that's called a bottom sheet, or sometimes a fitted sheet if it has elastic round the corners.

ontop of the baby you need a cellular blanket and or top sheet depending how cold it is.

sometimes people just swaddle with a top sheet.

and sometimes people just use a grobag.

just to confuse you even more

starey thats my ds's birthday

you probably wont use grobag straight away if in moses basket or crib.
We swaddled ds with his top sheet and cellular blanket until he moved into cot when he went into grobag then and loved it

look here

you see, fitted sheets for over the mattress, and then flannel sheets plus cellular blankets for on top of the baby.

maybe it's the terminology that's confusing you. a top sheet is just a sheet. sometimes called a flat sheet, sometimes a top sheet, sometimes just a sheet.

you aren't thick! it's just confusing because different shops and different books call things different names. you'll be fine!

I never bothered with top sheets - the cellular blankets wash so easily I just changed them every time.

i think this site is amazing sometimes. it can get so confusing. at least if you (mrsbadger) didn't need them even if i bought the wrong ones i can use them for something else. haha. thanks guys its been a great help.

i've got four brushed cotton flat sheets (i.e. to use as top sheets) that I washed before use then dd being a hot baby never used. She hated grobags as she couldn't get out of them and would get too hot in them. I was paranoid about her being cold so had fitted sheets, fat sheets and cellular blankets for moses basket (that she never bloody slept in) and cot. Only bought fitted sheets this time (boy) and not bothering with flat sheets at all!!
