Hi all,
Im suffering here and went out to get some lactulose today. The chemist said it was ok but on the bottle it says use with caution especially in the first 3 months..im 9 weeks pregnant. Has anyone else taken it, do you think its ok? Orange juice lots of water etc isnt helping! But will just have to muddle through if lactulose is unsafe.
Thanks

my doctor diagnosed lactulose for me when i was around 5 weeks pregnant and then again last month (im 22 weeks now). Luckily I have been fine with it and it works! I suffer from IBS otherwise and the bloating was quite painful in early pregnancy so it was wonderful to have lactulose as a relief.

Congrats on your pregnancy, hope everyone goes well..

Hi maybebaby23

I don't know about lactulose sorry.

However, I take Califig, which is basically syrup of figs with senna...so it's mostly all natural. I have just checked the bottle and it doesn't say anything about pregnancy, and the pharmacist said it would be fine.

I have used it for years, it works, plus it doesn't turn constipation into the runs (tmi sorry but senokot etc used to do that) but it just naturally loosens your stools

You can buy it in all pharmacies, and it's cheap (it has a funny taste, but if it works...hey swig it down lol

Congrats by the way I am 10 weeks

Good luck x

you can't beat good old-fashioned prunes - tinned are ok but the dried/semi-dried ones work best. a good handful maybe twice a day should do the trick!

I agree with camflower, i've had terrible const., in pregnancy too BUT fresh prune juice (health food shops or asda stock it too!) has worked total wonders - its not the best-tasting thing in the world but a quarter to half a glass downed in one every morning has completely sorted the problem out!! thank god cos i was going mad... 17weeks+3

Yep, prune juice does the trick every time!! (Morrison's also stock it) If you mix it half and half with apple juice you don't notice the taste - though I don't mind it myself...

Hi - congratulations on your pregnancy!

I thought prune juice tasted of poison, and drinking it made me physically sick. I heartily recommend dried apricots - they're fabulous, and they actually taste pleasant. You only need four or five a day, if even that.

at least this subject isn't taboo here (as it is in 'real' life generally haha) & I wish the midwives would include advice like this (I got the 'drink prune juice' advice from my mum's friend last month!) in the packs you get instead of just lots of 'don't do this, don't eat that' lists...
