Keeping Fit 1st Trimester

Hi, I am 8 weeks pregnant and have stopped doing exercise since I found out - had previous mc and taking things carefully, but really want to keep fit - and ideally be jogging. I feel sluggish already and my gym doesn't seem very switched on when it comes to pregnancy.
I know yoga is popular but was hoping I might be able to do more cardio workout?
Any advice would be great...

I kept on running/jogging throughout first trimester, despite having previous mc. As most early MCs are due to chromosomal factors (and mine definitely was - was a mmc so had analysis done), running or exercise don't increase the mc risk - basically there is nothing you can do to prevent the mc if the chromosomes mean the fetus is not viable. Kept on jogging (on treadmill to be more careful) through 32 weeks and really made me feel a lot better and healthier - studies show that running in pregnancy makes the placenta grow bigger and healthier, and is good for both mother and baby. Also did prenatal yoga and pilates and weight training (still doing all that). Can't run anymore as am 38 weeks but still do fast uphill walk on treadmill for 30 mins three times a week, which gives me cardio workout. Staying fit in pregnancy is fantastic and should make the delivery and then recovery easier too. Hope all goes well for you.

Swimming is a great way to keep in shape while pg all your body is supported and it gives you an all over workout.

The best judge of what your body can do safely is you. I have continously worked out 4 -5 times a week since conception and have had a really good pregnancy so far (am 32 1/2 weeks)

My personal trainer and midwife both told me as long as I can have a conversation while i'm working out it's fine.

I personally stopped running at 12 weeks but that was because I felt uncomfortable (like I needed to wear a bra on my non existant bump)

spinning is really good I'm 32 weeks and have just had to step it down again to aqua aerobics but I love it!

Hi All!

I am 10 weeks with my first and stopped going to the gym for the last 8 weeks just cause i've been sooo tired. I just started back this week with wights and up hill walking. I read that providing you breeth through the exercises and don't hold your breath and strain that you should be fine.

pippa251 i love spinning but wasn't sure if it would be ok. Did you spin from early on cause i have really missed it!

I span from about week 14 but just because I stopped running then. however, I researched it on the web and spoke to the teacher who said it's fine to do- nicole kidman also did it through out her pregnancy. Just make sure (which I'm sure you will anyway) that you drink loads and don't get too hot.

I worked out normally through my first trimester (including 2 quite hardcore mountaineering trips) and at 27 weeks am still working out but at a much reduced intensity, resting when I feel like it etc.

So far I've had a great pregnancy and am full of energy.

Interesting about the spinning though - I love spin classes but had assumed they would be too intense for pregnancy.

I actually found spinnig classes really good- I could def know how much I was doing and how much I had stepped the work out down

I did get some funny looks though!

Thanks pippa251 and Queenoftheharpies! I have really missed spinning i will go back u think it is gonna be an effort though but i'll take it easy for the first few sessions.

I'm beginning to think a lot of it is just listening to my body and not pushing it too hard. I think we sometimes forget that there are women in third world countries and tribes around the work that have to practically do manual labour throughout their pregnancies!! (Not that i'l go that far though!!)

Happy spinning ladies!

I'm still jogging 3 times a week, as well as keeping me fit I find it's good for clearing my mind of worries I've stopped surfing though but am still climbing and will hopefully be able to do so till about 6 months, fingers crossed, with a full body harness.

I think the main thing with exercising is not to get too hot or dehydrated
