Pregnancy

does this sound like SPD?

Or is it just the normal aches and pains of pregnancy?

My back went last weekend, it suddenly just sort of froze and it was days before the pain subsided and I could actually stand up straight.

It has been fine for a few days but then then I am getting a different type of pain.

It hurts right at the bottom of my spine, and at both sides of my bottom. I'm also getting pain at the left side of my groin and down my left leg.

Simple tasks seem to be making it hurt more, even standing washing the dishes is painful.

I'm going to book to see the doctor anyway but just wondered what people thought

It sounds like sciatica. I've got it too. V common in pregnancy - sciatic nerve is trapped. I've seen a chiro (private) and have been referred to a physio at the hospital. It's a pain (literally!) as any walking or activity seems to bring it on.

It could be SPD but I've never had that so someone else will help you with that.

I was just going to write what herbietea has already written. Often it's mistaken for sciatica as the symptoms are v similar.

I'm currently suffering with sacroiliac pain and it really is excrutiating. I've got a physio appointment booked and I'm taking co-codamol to take the edge off.

How many weeks are you?

I'm 19 weeks so have a long way to go yet. I saw the doc on Monday and she gave me some co-codamol and told me to come back if it continued.

Even sitting down is uncomfortable. The most comfy position is lying on my side with a cushion between my knees

Thanks for the advice everyone

Yep, sounds like PGP (Pelvic Girdle Pain) as previously mentioned. I had it with DS1. Problem is that many midwives & GPs don't appear to recognise it - I was diagnosed by my Chiropractor (which did help, but was very expensive after several regular treatments throughout my pregnancy) ...My GP would not refer me to Physio as she didn't recognise the condition - even after I presented her with an internet article describing my exact symptoms - just prescribed drugs which I was reluctant to take.

Try to push your GP/midwife for a referral rather than painkillers, but if that fails I would recommend Chiro or private physio if you've got the money to spare as it really can be debilitating (as I'm sure you've discovered!)

Obviously if you go down the Chiro route ensure that your practitioner is experienced in treatment during pregnancy.

im currently overdue with my 3rd ds and have suffered spd with this pregnancy and the last one, spd symptoms i suffer from
a stabbing pain in the groin/pubic bone area made worse by certain positions you sit and lie in ...
pain when standing on one leg such as washing your feet in the shower or putting underwear/trousers on...
pain when your legs open wide which can make certain activities hard and painful such as getting in a car and sex
i find it easier to sit down whilst dressing and generally try and avoid positions that seem to make it worse for me, if i sit normal with my legs and feet straight it tends to be a managable pain
I was referred to a physio who gave me a tubi grip support to wear but to be honest it felt very tight and restrictive over my bump so it didnt really help me but it might work for you
symptoms do tend to dissapear quite soon after delivery but its a hard pregnancy,
good luck to you and try and rest as much as you can

oh and yes lying with a pillow between your legs does seem to help a little and keep your knees together when you turn over in bed, this helps a little too x
