Do I need to cancel this scan appointment?

I had my booking in appointment with MW on Monday and she spoke to me about booking my dating scan. Apparently now in my area everyone is offered a combined dating and nuchal scan. I told her I do not want a nuchal scan, just the dating scan please. She said that was fine and made a little note.

Yesterday my appointment letter came direct from the hospital, stating that I am booked in for a 'nuchal dating scan' taking an hour. Now, I assume this means I have been booked in for a nuchal scan regardless? Should I cancel it, and speak to MW, or should I just turn up and say I don't want the nuchal part? I'm not sure if this would cause problems on the day.

What to do?

IIRC you can refuse the nuchal screening on the day, it just means they don't do those measurements. Are you booked in for any blood tests as welll? In my PCT they do the nuchal scan plus bloods.

I should imagine it would be the same person doing the scan in any case. Just tell them at the beginning that you don't want them to take the nuchal measurement.

When I had my dating scan I was just asked there and then if I wanted them to measure the nuchal fold. I wasn't asked in advance (iirc). If I'd said no then they just would have skipped that part of the scan.

I am leaning towards that which has eben said by others - but I guess this should shorten the appointment duration (a dating scan does not take an hour) - and maybe you should ring and explain so that they can potentially give that time to someone else.

OTOH - they are bound to be running late anyway - so it might just allow them o get back on track timewise.

Hi, sorry yes it did say blodds will be taken as well. However, this was not done at the hospital in my previous 2 pregnancies and I am having bloods taken with my midwife in two weeks- very confusing!

Sounds like they are offering you the nuchal fold test combined with bloods. This is supposed to be slightly more accurate. The bloods have to be taken the same day as the scan.

When I went for my scan last Nov I refused the nuchal bit on the day. They therfore just did a quick scan to check the baby was OK and measured it to provide a due date. Think it was about 15 min in total. They didn't seem to mind not doing the nucahl but I did have to sign about 5 bits of paper saying I understood the implications of not having it done.

sounds like the combined test - they use the blood results and the nuchal measurement to calciulate your risk

if you don't want the screening you may need to cancel the blood rest

best ring them and ask
