Anyone experienced bleeding in late pregnancy?

My sister is just over 6 months pregnant & spent an hour in hospital last night due to quite heavy bleeding. She was examined & the doctor said it was probably due to changing hormone levels or something. The bleeding is still there but much lighter.
I never experienced anything like this in pregnancy & am feeling a little worried about her. Has anyone else had similar happen to them?

Placenta Praevia is a possible cause. I presume that has been eliminated?

Pinkchampagne - please make sure they have checked your sister out fully i.e. not just a speculum examination and a quick guess at cervical erosion or something. Please find out whether they have scanned her, if they have not then she really really needs to be scanned and should request this firmly.

Possible causes (other than cervical erosion) are placental problems as hobbgoblin says. If they haven't ruled these out then they really need to.

I am hoping so. She had an examination & was in hospital for an hour before being discharged. The baby is still moving a lot apparently.

Just spoken to her & she said she wasn't scanned but had an internal, and they have told her she has a cervical erosion. She also has SPD, but that wouldn't cause these kind of problems.

Pinkchampagne sorry for the delay in replying - please find out whether they actually saw an erosion on the cervix or whether that is their 'best guess' as it were. If they have not actually seen one, then she really really needs to go for a scan to rule out probs with the placenta and she should firmly request one.

My story is very depressing but I initially thought my waters had gone, was examined with a speculum and told there was brown discharge probably due to erosion but they didn't think my waters had gone as cervix was closed. I went back to A&E again with bleeding, was sent home again. The fourth time I went back to hospital they found my cervix was dilated. They finally did a scan - there was partial placental abruption and no water around the baby. Now finding this out earlier would not have saved the baby but sending me home with ruptured membranes and partial placental abruption was very dangerous. I'm sorry if this is scary and it is much more likely to be erosion, but it's best to rule out placental problems.

Oh how horrible, Owlingate. Sorry to hear about your experience.

I was concerned when my sister told me they hadn't scanned her, but just examined her. She said the examination made the bleeding a lot worse but that the baby was monitered and appeared fine, and they told her she had a cervical erosion & to expect it to probably happen again. Not sure whether they actually saw it. Will ask her & suggest she insists on a scan. It is hard because I don't want to panic her but I am worrying for her.

If they saw one then there's nothing to worry about - it's just me being neurotic when I hear about anyone having any unusual bleeding / discharge in 2nd trimester
Let me know how everything goes.
Oh yeah and I have relatives who have had 2nd tri bleeding with no cause found who now have healthy bouncing babies - what happened to me almost never happens!

It sounds a little like bad practice too given that if Praevia is at all suspected then internal/cervical exam is known to increase bleeding and thus up risk to health of mother and baby.

I'm guessing that they thought it extremely unlikely in her case.

I hope all is well, do you have any news today? has bleeding stopped?

Owlingate, so sorry to hear of your experience and dreadful loss. I'm awaiting my 30 week scan to ascertain whether my placenta is still v. low/over cervix. Just a few weeks til I know.

The bleeding seems to have stopped today so fingers crossed she will be ok. She said the internal made the bleeding a lot worse but they seem to think it is a cervical erosion & let her go after an hour. They monitered the baby & all appeared ok. It is all a worry when these things happen though.
