When should I be contacted by midwife?

I'm 8 weeks now, told my GP three weeks ago that I was pregnant and he only wanted to know in which hospital I wanted to give birth. So I left him a note (I thought I would get another appointment but the receptionist only wanted a written note) that I had chosen St Mary's in London. The GP had said I would be contacted by the midwives. But more than two weeks later I still have no news. Is that normal? I went back to the GP last week to ask if they had dealt with it already. They said yes but it really sounded like a lie.
I'm a bit stressed because the GP said I had to decide quickly otherwise it would be difficult to get a place... So I decided quickly at a very early stage just to get things started and now I'm just waiting
I tried to call the hospital today but the answering machine told me to call in the afternoons when it usually gets very busy at work so I'll probably not really be able or even not think about it.

It is normal (unfortunately). I haven't normally heard from my midwife until about 9 or 10 weeks.
Don't worry too much as it probably is being dealt with (but no harm in keeping on chasing them up - just to be sure!)

I think it varies - in some areas they like to do an early appointment so you see someone pretty much as soon as you tell them you are pregnant, so they can make sure you have all the advice about what not to eat etc. In other places they don't seem to bother till you are around 3 months because a fair number of pregnancies fail before that point.

thanks, good to hear that this is normal. I already got used to the fact that I won't be seen until the 12th week, I'm even not panicing anymore about some of my symptoms. I'm sure everything is fine and as it should be. So it would be perfectly fine for me if they told me now that I had my first appointment in a month. At least I would know that they had got the papers (I really don't trust those receptionists)

You should get a letter through with your scan date and details of how to make a MW appt
It is quite common to not see a MW until after the nuchal scan

I would call the GPs next week and ask them to check the hosp got your referral

Called the GP again today and talked to another receptionist. The doctor I had been with at my first appointment has been away since a while and will be back on Monday. And an other doctor will refer me. Which means that the receptionist had really lied to me when she said it had been dealt with. I just would have thought that they would refer me as soon as I had left the building. Well, I guess, at least this time they will really do it. From tomorrow on I'll be in week 9.

I didn't hear until about week 13 (got my scan at fourteen weeks)as my area is having a pregnancy boom.

Maybe they're just busy.

I'm sure they messed it up. Otherwise the receptionist would not have said that the other doctor would refer me. I find it incredible that the first receptionist lied to me and then still didn't do anything.
Should stop moaning, the most important thing is that my baby is developping fine and not the administration of the health care system.
