cures for heartburn

i feel as though there is velcro in my throat. its agony, with ds i drank lots of milk which was the only thing that helped, this time nothing is helping. its all day and worse in the evening. any suggestions. also, does anyone feel queasy when their baby kicks???

Gaviscon, swigged from the bottle. Hide bottles around the house like it was illegal gin

I have drunk so much Gaviscon over the past 6 months (baby due tomorrow) that I'm pretty sure it now counts as a food group.

I'm sure some people will come along with lovely herbal remedies and yoga positions but I'd get thee to Boots.

Don't try Boots own brand though - it's cheaper but it's rubbish.

Have found that at night it helps if I lie on my left side with my head raised up a bit.

Don't eat heavily before bed. But a little light snack seems to help too. (don't know why) generally eating little and often.

Pepsi or Coke. Someone on here suggested it a while back and it works a treat for me. I have a six pack of little bottles in the fridge for emergencies!

Yogurt it neutralises the acid that causes heartburn and reflux osophagitus (sp?). The live one though is the best and not a fruity one.

Do not drink cold milk as it is acidic and the cold will make you think you are helping yourself when you really aren't!

Natural yogurt seems to help a bit for me too, the fruity ones dont. Coffee definately makes it worse. I have Peptac on pescription from the doctors and get through a big bottle in less than a week, its cheaper than forking out for Gaviscon all the time.
Sleeping on my left side with lots of pillows and the head of the bed elevated on lots of books is the only way I can sleep. If I turn only my right side i can feel the acid creeping up almost immediately!.

ranitidine or omeprazole from the gps- its the only thing that touches mine- that said, I do suffer from a hiatus hernia and have terrible heartburn even when not pregnant, so my suggestions may be extreme, but I have horrendous heartburn so can totally sympathise x

Eat little and often, avoid, fatty foods, greasy food, spicy, coffee, fizzy, sugary. Eat bland - no fun.

I can get by with a Rennie after each meal.

Oh and eat slowly...

i agree with lilymolly go to docs for tablets, i only suffer from this during pregnancy but over the counter or traditional remadies dont touch it.

Wld agree with Lilymolly re ranitidine if it's really bad. Can't remember when it's safe though? It's rotten isn't it, I only ever had it when pg.

Yep, omeprazole the best way to go. Heartburn was horrendous for me last time, its not been nearly so bad since I started on Omeprazole.

Someone told me to have a teaspoon of vinegar and like a numpty I did - please don't it hurts like hell (mainly because its pure acid!)

I found spearmint chewing gum helped as saliva helps to neutralies the acid and only eating bland food.

Hi all

Sorry to hijack but have been up all night crying with heartburn. Have been using gaviscon and natural yoghurt, but it is there 24/7 and worse in the evening. I'm lying raised on my left hand side, but this also gets uncomfortable after a while.

I have a bad cough and cold which I know is not helping, but because of all of this I'm not sleeping and feel awful. No GP appointments until next week and can't cope with more nights of no sleep at all (I'm 34+1).

Please please someone out there help me x

go to chemist and you can buy ranititine over the counter- at 75mg- you can take 2 if needed to give you a dose of 150mg

I take 150mg twice a day!

big glugs of gaviscon was the only thing that did anything for me. and being propped up. was the worst part of pregnancy imo i feel for you ladys.

Is it def OK to take 150mg of ranitidine twice daily?

I've been taking 75mg morning and evening which, together with Gaviscon Advance, has generally done the trick. I just buy it from the chemist.

However baby seems to have grown a lot in the last couple of weeks and I think I've had a flood of preg hormones too - and my heartburn/acid/reflux has got worse and 75mg twice a day isn't cutting the mustard any more!

Last night I had 75mg at 6pm and then another 75mg at 10pm and joy of joy slept through the night for the first time in weeks!

If I can take 150mg morning and night I'll be a new person, I think!!

The standard dose of ranitidine is 300mg, 150 mg morning and 150mg in the evening...It does say though to have it prescribed by a doc if pg or bf....

My MW told me it was okay after 32 weeks. However if you ask chemist you'll not get it it if you say it's for you, but you can get it in Tescos etc with ordinary shopping.

However maybe you put call through to GP to double check?

i'm 36wks with crippling heartburn, causing dehydration (its agony to drink anything) i've only been prescribed 75mg twice a day.so go back to your doctor just to be sure.thats what they are there for

From another 'extreme' heartburn sufferer if rinitidine isn't working then ask for Omeprazole. It is much better I promise. You can definitely take more than 75mg of rinitidine twice a day, that's the dose the over the counter stuff tells you to take. It wouldn't touch mine (I have it all the time, not just when pg). Honestly though, Omeprazole is the way forward - it would put you back to normal.

In terms of the diet/remedies stuff everyone is different, but anything dairy makes me worse. The only thing that I find helps at all is sipping water.
