Ok, so I run the risk of lookin stupid here, but here goes anyway... this is what mumsnet is for after all!!

Getting sharp pains in my back since yest afternoon. 37+2 wks today. Here's a run-down of events, starting from about 4pm yest.

About 6 short, sharp pains in middle back, all in the same small area, just to the right hand side of the spine in the space of 1hour, each lasting no more than 1 or 2 seconds.
Nothing more for about 5 hours.
About 12 more short, sharp pains in exactly the same spot as before over the period of about 90mins, this time towards the end they were lasting slightly longer- 3-4 seconds each.
Strong BH when going to bed.
Slept about 6 hours.
5 more sharp pains on rhs of middle back, same spot as before, lasting up to 5 seconds each.
Niggly twinges on lower left hand side of back on & off since this.

Could this be very early labour? These pains are not at all what I imagined it to be like, but maybe it's just early stages? Or am I being stupid here? Opinions from those with experience needed, please! Thanks.

Labour pains usually last a bit longer than a few seconds - usually sustained pain for maybe 30 seconds or a minute.

I'm not sure what could be causing these pains, unless you're being kicked somewhere and it's referred pain...sorry not to be more helpful!

Not really sounding like early labour though

Maybe you should phone your midwife and ask them about it?

OhHowMarvellous, that's what I thought too, that they should be lasting longer...
