Pregnancy

can my GP give me something for nausea or just for vomiting?

I am approx 8 1/2 weeks and have been really struggling with nausea for the last week. I have been sick a few times but really it is all day nausea, with a little bit of elt up late evening which allows me to fall asleep at tleast. I then usually wake around 3 or 4 feeling sick again.

would the gp be able to give me anything safe, or do they only give things in the case of actual vomiting? i have had to take today off work as I feel so dreadful, but can't go on taking time off.

I was SICK, SICK, SICK for the first 14 weeks. So sick I couldn't even drink water! GP said they won't give anything and just had to eat ginger biscuits and dry crackers. Could be worth a visit to the GP though as their advice could differ from surgery to surgery. I know how awful it is but I think it's a case of putting up with it and realising that it will pass...although it doesn't feel like that at the time!

In about 7 or 8 weeks you are going to feel amazing and you won't remember how bad you felt!

Good luck with your pregnancy

ah, the good old ginger biscuits and crackers remedy , lovelymama - bet you got fed up of that advice?!?!Can't believe they wouldn't give you anything.

I really hope I will feel better soon, am trying to see it as a positive sign as last week i panicked as my symptoms went away for a few days. Work is the problem, no one there knows and a school is not an environment where it's easy to disguise sickness!

No that's not necessarily the case, although a lot of GPs will have you believe it

Some are reluctant to prescribe

Most will do so if pressed and/or sympathetic.

Nausea alone can be classified as HG (hyperemesis Gravidarum or extreme pregnancy sickness)
I had it twice and you don't have to vom to have a debilitating condition.

You can be given various things, some work only on the mechanical side, so stop you throwing up but you still feel rough.

I think some are good for both but can't remember which.

Definitely keep asking till you find someone who will give you something and/or sign you off work.

I was actually sick, had both neusea and vomiting for my ENTIRE pg and did not get anything, so you will be very lucky if you do. It won't hurt to ask though.

Try a biscuit first thing before you get up, and sip fluids, in particular ginger cordial which will help immensely. Also travel bands might help.

thank you for all your advice. i feel bad because i know people who have ended up in hospital with HG and here am i complaining about nausea but it is taking over my life at the moment.

I currently have weekly acupuncture which seemed to help for a couple of days last week. I also feel bad as my dd isnt getting too much attention from me at the moment!

I have my gp visit tomorrow so will mention, she is usually quite sympatheic.

Lots of people do have drugs prescribed, it depends if the Dr thinks you are either at risk of not getting enough nutrition or becoming very dehydrated, whether you are able to carry on with general activities and life, looking after children etc.

However some just refuse to as a matter of principle, my male Dr refused and the female ones in the same practice were far more understanding.

Good luck tomorrow and don't underplay it - there are things you can take. Something as simple as promethazine (phenergan) can help and is usually tried first - it's given to kids for travel sickness so very little risk to baby.

blimey starlight, you poor thing!

It's not that i'm determined to get drugs,(and hearing your story, my symptoms aren't as extreme as some!)but just wondered what my options might be if this carries on. Next session of acupuncture might help it to ease off, fingers crossed. DH isn't being very understanding either which doesn't help.

They will prescribe, but the stuff won't necessarily work! I've now had two treatments of acupuncture and that's worked so much more than the drugs.
