Skiing in early pregnancy - any experiences?

Hi Ladies

Thank you sooo much for your support. Just got back from our hol and loved it. The MS really did go on the pistes (which was fab) and I just stuck to the easier runs with DH skiing (guarding) behind to make sure no crashes! We were very lucky with sun and lots of snow so that really helped the safe skiing. I must admit I was v tired at the end of the runs though so I did put my feet up in the cafes for a while, while the rest of my group did a couple of extra runs. My DS (18m) also loved the snow which was lovely.

I am really glad I took your advice. Lots of snacks in pockets really helped keeping those energy levels up

I skiied last winter at 7 weeks, about a week after I found out I was pg. My technique has never been so good, I was terrified of falling but didn't. We were in a small we stuck to the quieter runs deliberately (however well I ski, I can't control who crashes into me). Morning sickness kicked in on the way back from the airport on the way home. I'd go, and make the most of it. I now have a fabulous 3 month old baby boy smile, and realistically will not be skiing this year. Maybe not next either sad.

I went at 12 weeks. and was fine.. the sharp cold air actually got rid of my morning sickness..

The only downside was me throwing mini tantrums now and again when I got over tired on runs.. So I'd say just take it easy and enjoy the holiday too not just the skiing.. Plenty of hot chocolates at the cafe's!!

Make the most of it.. you'll not be able to enjoy it the same again.. tee he hee

I had that decision too - was in Canada at 9 wks pg - in the end I decided not to go downshill sking, as I was worried about the consequence of a major fall, but went cross country instead - ok, so not as exciting, but then you might find you don't relax on downhill runs anyway? And it was still good fun - is that an option for you? Other thing is check the altidude - I think I recall you should stay below 3000m, but guess you could check this with your gp. Also went snowshoe hiking for a week in Bulgaria at about 11 wks gone, and that was great fun.
I did with ds1 at about 7 weeks but I didn't know I was pg.

I had a great week - the odd high speed tumble, lots of vin chaud and blue cheese after dinner.

DS1 is now a healthy 3 year ols who's currently packing for his 1st skiing trip!

With regards to hormones, I think I'm right in saying that relaxin doesn't kick in with a vengeance until 12 weeks so don't worry too much.

Go, be a little bit careful but have fun!

Thanks Ladies for sharing your experiences and for your support

I must say I am now excited again to go skiing which has overcome the worry. Your help has also help convince paranoid DH and DPs which is great too.

I didn't actually think about the risk to me with skiing re hormones or anything so that is great advice will stick to greens and blues I think. We are going to France too .. so thanks for the reminder about being careful what to eat....

GarbibaldiGirl oooh if the skiing takes away the horrible MS that would be lovely. I will look forward to that one (if it works for me)

I'm going skiing for new year at 9 weeks pregnant. did it at same stage in last pregnancy and when on the slopes i got complete relief from nausea - a wonderful and unexpected bonus! i ate constantly to keep my blood sugar up. think only risk is if you injure yourself and can't have drugs/xrays. so think you have to ski well within your ability.

I did went ski-ing at about 8 weeks pregnant with DD#1 and just stuck to easier slopes and took it easy. The most difficult thing was being tired and nauseous so I would only go out for shorter times on the slopes than I might otherwise have planned and always had a little snack in my pocket in case I needed something while out to help avoid the nausea a bit more.

found out i was pregnant on the wednesday and went skiing on the saturday - not ideal! GP said it was fine, but I was very tense the whole time - and not being able to have my fair share of mulled wine/not being able to tell anyone was a real bind.....

I went skiing duing my first pregnancy, I was about 10 weeks. I spoke to my doctor first and she said I would be fine as it was so early. I did go and was fine but felt very nauseus (sp) not sure if this was pregnancy or altitude as we were in Saas Fee. Have a word with your doctor just to be sure. (I did feel very guilty though as a couple in my ski school told me how they had been trying for children for twelve years, I didn't dare let them know my circumstances!
Oh as a side issue I also forgot that the cheese I ate for breakfast daily was unpasteurised. My little bump from that trip is now a healthy, intelligent 7yr old boy. Have fun.

I went skiing when I was about that far gone with my ds. I had lost a baby a couple of months previously and I was really worried about going - so much so that I went to see mr Dr who laughed me out of his office for being worried.

Just remember that your baby is still tiny and has lots of fluid and padding around it to protect it! It would be far more dangerous to go skiing later on in pregnancy. Obviously just take it easy and ski to your ability to minimise falls etc.

Oh and also - I found it knackering so be sure to make time to rest. I often had a sleep in before dinner as the physical activity just wiped me out!

I would ski at this gestation, mainly because at that stage your uterus is still in your pelvis rather than your abdomen. So quite well protected by your pelvis.

You're more at risk of pulling a muscle in your knee, etc though as relaxin hormone in prenancy can increase the risk of strains/sprains. So maybe stick to runs that you can cope with easily?
We are off skiing for Xmas this year with the whole family. I was really looking forward to our first hol for ages and then I found out a few weeks back that I was pregnant.

I am so pleased to be pregnant but I am slightly annoyed that I am pregnant before Xmas and for our hols (I know lots of people have trouble TTC so I should thank my lucky stars.....) but I can't help but worry now about whether or not I should ski on our hols that we have paid for

Has anyone else been skiing in very early pregnancy (7-8wks). Should I worry, or is the little bean sooo small it won;t impact things much.
