I had my 20 week scan on thursday. I asked the sonographer and she said she definately saw an "apendage"(sp) down below and was absoloutly sure it was a boy.

We are very excited about this as we already have 3 beautiful girls. Not only that but I am one of 3 girls, my older sis has 3 girls and my younger sis has 1 girl. Dh's older brother has 1 girls. So this wil be the first boy grandchild for both sets of grandparents.

After having so many girls in the family it seems really weird to be told i'm expecting a boy.

Out of curiousity I just wandered if anyone has previously been told that they were definately having a boy, only to be confornted by a little girl a few months later.

I, of course, would not be dissapointed if I had another girl (I do love my girlies), but I do feel it would be nice to have a boy for my dh and dad.

Thanx

Congratulations!! Hope all is well?

My understanding of it is that they are more likely to get a boy right, because there is something to see, they see it, so it's there IYKWIM? With a girl, it isn't there, they don't see it, declare her a girl, but it could be hiding!

Hope that makes sense?!

littleboyblue · 22/11/2008 08:34

Hi pinkdolly.
When I was preg with ds, I knew 100% that it was gonna be a boy. Without a shadow of a doubt knowledge I'm talking.
Anyway this time, they've told me it's a boy, but I've been convinced from about 9 weeks that this one is a girl. I was in shock when they said a boy. Very pleased though.
Agree with Natalie, have heard that too, but my friend was told she was having a girl coz they saw the start of a uterus growing.

It's the sperm that decides the sex of the baby so think it's irrelevant the ratio of boys to girls in your family.

CharleeInChains · 22/11/2008 08:37

I was scanned reguarly with ds right up untill i was induced and about 7-8 times even at the end of my pregnancy the scanning lady said he was a girl, the last scan i had was a different person and she said 'most dinfinatley a boy - and oh my what huge testicles he has!'

I rang DP and said 'dp your daughter has grown something she shouldn't have!'

And so our little Phoebe becuase a Jack very quickly!

CharleeInChains · 22/11/2008 08:40

In our hospital there is a crtain mark that shows up on the scans in the text above the picture, i have checked everyone i know even people that didn't ask the sex and all the boy babies scan's had a little Y by the mum's name so now i am magically 'guessing' all my friends babies sex and i am always right!

{Not sure if it works in any other hospital though)

abbymeg · 22/11/2008 09:00

This happened to a friend of mine. She bought all blue, thinking that it was highly unlikely an error had been made at her 20 week scan, and went on to have a little girl.

charleeinchains - I love your magical guessing. Your friends will think you have a special gift.

Tapster · 22/11/2008 11:01

Did you not see the appendage? I ended up having two 20 week scans and both times I definitely saw it was a boy. I think it is much less likely to make a mistake when they say its a boy.

SoupDragon · 22/11/2008 11:06

They are less likely to be wrong if they say it's a boy.

Bicnod · 22/11/2008 13:01

OMG - I just checked if there was a letter next to my name on the last scan I had and there was. So now I think I know what I'm having and I don't know whether to tell DH as we said we didn't want to know... ARgh!!!! What do I do?!!!!!!!! Help!!!

pinkdolly · 22/11/2008 14:56

No, I didn't see any appendage. But technically I am supposed to wear glasses, gave up wearing them as have a 6,5 and 2 year old, so have had 6 years of babies/toddlers ruining my glasses. I am not overly troubled with my sight. But every now and again I do put them on for something and realise how much clearer things are.

Any, through my rambling basically I forgot my glasses so although I could see baby, I could not pick out detail like that.

I did think that the sonographers are less likely to get it wrong with a boy also. For all three of my girls I asked the sex and was told that they had their legs crossed.

I have checked my scan photos and there is no such letter next to my name.

This is worrying me, I have had 4 scans so far and from the second one, the my gyno said it was a boy (yes, with large testicles). I am now in my 29th week and starting to worry that all the blue clothes, blue walls, blue blankets and the 'Harry' letters for the door will mean any daughter I now produce will be a tad tomboyish......

fizzpops · 22/11/2008 15:24

I just checked the scan pics for my DD born April 22nd and - you guessed it - there is a Y!

Don't panic Bicnod, seems it isn't always the case. Unless they thought she was a boy and were mistaken of course.

Bicnod · 23/11/2008 18:19

Fizzpops - thank you so much... I really upset myself by thinking I knew for sure because I really wanted to be suprised (but knew that I would notice letter on scan next time I looked at it, having read about it, which is why I looked) - so I'm SOOOOOOOOOO relieved to know that it's not a certainty. I would be overjoyed to have a boy and equally overjoyed to have a girl - but I don't want to know until he/she comes along feel much much better x

fizzpops · 24/11/2008 08:50

No problem, I felt exactly the same.

expatinscotland · 24/11/2008 08:51

Hmm.

It was VERY obvious even to me that DS was a boy at the 20 week scan.

The sonographer just stopped the scan machine and you could see his bits very clearly.

pooka · 24/11/2008 09:09

NOt me, but a friend from my post-natal group was told she was having a son, but had a daughter instead.

Took her grandmother rather a long time to stop referring to the baby as a boy. And a lot of clothes had to be returned (mostly by relatives, she didn't buy much). But she was happy.

bythepowerofgreyskull · 24/11/2008 09:18

2 DS's here it was totally clear on the scan the shot we got of both of them was as if we were looking up a toilet they were sat on iykwim two legs two nuggets one willy

shootfromthehip · 24/11/2008 09:27

Was told DD was a boy right up until she got here. Had a boy's name and a blue nursery to go with a beautiful baby girl!! Was quite taken aback and said 'but I didn't order a girl' when they held her up (had ECS).

DS was 'obvious' on his 20 week scan but still refused to believe it until I saw for myself. Thought he might have just had a small cord!!

Notquitegrownup · 24/11/2008 09:30

DS1 showed us his bits, magnificently. With ds2 the sonographer searched hard and thought she saw an appendage, so we were pretty sure that he was a boy. However, she warned us that it might have been a bit of the cord, so not to buy too much blue stuff. All was well and he was the much needed younger brother ds1 had been hoping for . . .

PuzzleRocks · 24/11/2008 09:40

My daughters scan pictures had a y too. It must mean somthng else as they knew she was a girl all along.

FlirtyThirty · 26/11/2008 13:06

Ooh - I'm quite relived to know that my 'Y' doesn't necessarily mean I'm having a boy. Not that i don't want a boy...it's just that I do want a asurprise on the day!

NellyTheElephant · 26/11/2008 14:00

Just to add to what the others have said re the 'Y' on the scan, I just looked back at the 20 week scan of my DD2 and there is a Y and she most definitely isn't a boy. There is no Y in the scan of my current pregnancy even though I have been assured that he is a boy!! So this theory doesn't seem to hold any water!!

mrsfossil · 26/11/2008 14:31

hi i had my 20 week scan yesterday and was told that she couldn't see any bot bits, so to assume it is a girl. She would only commit to being 80% sure. I'm annoyed now that i asked because i really didn't mind boy or girl now i'm worried i will bond with my bump thinking its female then be upset if a boy pops out. So I think that i will have to book a 4d scan because it will drive me mad for the next 20 weeks.

Ps there are no letters after my name.

minxi · 26/11/2008 14:32

oh so none the wiser here then!! I was all set to call the hospital to check what they thought - will stick with my surprise!
