Telling the sex at 12 week scan? Really?

Apologies if this topic has been covered before, I'm off to my 12 week scan this afternoon and a friend of mine keeps insisting that they can now tell the sex at the 12 week scan. Its the first i've heard of it... I just googled it and found out that some of the top private docs etc may be able to tell that early but has anyone had any experience of it at an NHS hospital? (I'm going to Whipps Cross, East London).

I'm nervous about the scan but also DYING to know what i'm having, hoping my friend is correct. What d'you reckon?

Wouldn't have thought so, to be honest. Not accurately, anyway.

When I was pg with both my dc's I asked if they would look and see if they could identify what I was having at my 12 week scan and both times they were correct. just dont hold it in stone as it could change at the 20 week scan good luck!

I asked at my first NHS scan as was nearly 15 weeks and she wouldn't even hazard a guess, was a bit snooty and said 'no, it is too early'.....So, I doubt you will get told.

Hi citybranch, I was told after my 13 week scan that there was a 70% chance it was a boy, the sonographer couldn't see any 'bits' but said that the angle of the pelvis is usually a good indicator, 20 week scan in 3/4 weeks so we shall see. TBH i'll be shocked if it's a boy, everyone including myself has a strong feeling it's a girl.

For what it's worth that's how we got the sonographer to tell us (He said they don't normally), as we kept refering to the baby as 'her' all the way though the scan, at the end he asked us why we were so sure it was a girl and then promptly said well it looks like a boy to me !!

Worth a try Let us know how you get on

Thanks for your replies! I asked, and got a 'no chance, too early'...oh well, all is fine so i'm really happy, just too impatient! My friend told me about 'nub theory', where the sex can be determined roughly between 11-14 weeks by the angle of the genital nub, apparently theres info on the web. Looking at my scan pic now, theres definitley a 'nub' of some sort but its probably a leg, lol.

I had a nuchal scan at 12 weeks at the Fetal Medicine Centre and the sonographer said she was 80% sure it was a boy. 20 week scan on Friday so we will see what the NHS has to say then. I've got the blue clothes out the loft.
